Technically yes. Many of us still keep shrimp, but crayfish are a big no-no in general

They may have them but you would be supporting an unethical practice if you bought any.

Please don't advertise these, they're hugely destructive to the environment

Crayfish are still destructive. Little mosquito fish have caused havoc in many water ways, a few loose pieces of hyacinth have choked the Vaal, just a few rabbits in Australia became millions upon millions.

Dwarf crayfish are illegal in the UK, and have already caused lots of damage between all the species. It's even colder there than here so think about the damage.

If you really want something with claws go and get permits to collect Macrobrachium sp aka furry arm river prawns.

    Crayfish are illegal full stop.

From what are you basing this?

Crayfish are strictly blacklisted regardless of species if you don't have a permit

    Thanx Guys.
Please no need to get into an argument.

Reason why I am asking is because I saw a few proposals for Freshwater Crayfish to be Commercially bred as a food source.

Those farms get strict permits and yada yada. For us at home they're a big no-no

This is based on the nemba list of invasives, please get your facts right about the specific species before attacking someone

Have a look for previous posts covering this topic - there are a few. All crayfish species are illegal to own without a permit.

Hahaha, Ruben, Hendre is the last person you tell to go do research or get facts straight. The problem with crays is they destroy dam walls. They dig burrows into the walls' base and weakens it. There's a blanket ban on freshwater crays.

Alot of misinformation being thrown around here. Maybe post the actual 'blacklist' to verify whats being said (especially regarding permitting), to clear things up for everyone.

I can't find my original source blacklist but crayfish are most definitely not allowed without special permits. Information on this is difficult to get but those serious enough to do farming should know where to get them

So you basically quoting hearsay then. Until an actual list , like NEM:BA or its Prohibited section is posted, then everyone is merely going on gut feel and rumours?
Taking into account NEM:BA (and its big sister NEMA), permits to keep a category 1 species will only be given for growing biological control agents. Catagory 1 species will not be allowed for farming.

I have just checked with Professor Dirk Bellstedt at Stellenbosch who is involved with the blacklist and crayfish are 100% banned.

Astacus and Cherax are prohibited species, as they have already been found to be invasive. Do we want to find out the hard way with Dwarf crays?
