They're basically like an HOB filter without a pump, so they just overflowed into the tank. Like this:

That is a pretty awesome idea... I saw something similar on an indoor pond, basically just a DIY version of the breeder boxes because of the size needed. Thought it was a bit of a waste considering all that he stocked in the (black based) pond was a single (black) goldfish....

Apparently goldfish usually go through quite a colour change through life, they almost always end up as "gold" fish

Very true. Not sure what age this one was or what it looks like now, hopefully it livened up a little for the sake of the pond. Would have loved to see a few comets in there at the time though.

I just tried something similar on the cory tank, using that Dophin HOB I had lying around. Leca balls with a maidenhair fern split in two and creeping jenny cuttings (emersed) from the pond. Let’s see how it looks once filled out a bit!
PS clearly I need to trim this tank

Looks really good! I can see another filter or something on the far right - is that just a pump for circulation or a full filter?

It is the tank’s real filter (with biomedia and sponge).

Love it. Low maintenance jungle style with the focus on creating a great habitat for fish.

I love green aqua and aqua pros myself. Takashi Amano's home aquarium is my dream though.

Awesome, good luck! Let us know how it goes.

I don't think it needs a trim at all. i love the barely contained chaos

The moss covered igwagumi is particularly impressive, I think. Very difficult style to pull off!

@WernerP yes great aquarium! Prime example of how effective java fern used en masse can be. Must’ve taken a good couple of years to fill out like that!
