I'm toying with the idea of painting my driftwood with a varnish. The idea behind this is that the smooth surface will be easier to clean from algae.

Any idea what varnish to use? WIll this work? Or will it look dodgy?

Have you considered fiberglass resin? Think this will be better option than varnish.

There was a post earlier to a duram product that I am considering using to seal just about everything so I will be keeping an eye on this one too :)

The problem with this is that you will never be able to have fish like Ancistrus that rasp on the wood as part of their dietary requirements.

What reason do you have for wanting to seal it?

Was thinking that it would be easier to keep clean from algae. You have a very valid point regarding the ancistrus. Will shelve the idea.

An alternative is to buy those wood look-a-like ceramic ornaments
Also with these I have seen Ancistrus and the like suck the paint off them

The only thing i can think of is maby a silicone based resin, even if you do find something like it... and i doubt going to the hardware and asking a chop working there if its safe for fish would be taking a long shot cause im sure the answer would be yes just to sell something to you....
