    Hey guys.

So yesterday morning my balast burnt out after only 6 months old. Its the small plastic aqua lite one.

I dont want to buy another balast as they are expensive. So i was thinking of buying 2 ordinary light fittings and building it into the tanks lid and then puting 2 energy saving bulps in.

    The tank is a 3 foot 120litre.

So what do you guys think will it work or do i have to buy another balast and put florecent bulps in?

    a ballast

should not cost more than r100, i was at a lighting shop the other day that sold ballasts for r40, just check that the wattage for the bulb and ballast match. i also have a few contacts where you can buy stuff cheaply, did not see your location.

yes this could work, but it a lot of it depends on what setup you have, if you have a planted tank, you may need 4 of these fittings, if not then 2 will do. one on either end. also a 3 foot 120L is probable deeper than a standard 3 foot, so you may need a bit more than just 2 fittings.

i have done this with a 100L planted tank with some hornwort, java moss and valisneria and 2 lights were enough to light up the tank and the tiger barbs, but the plants need a bit more light.. so i would advise 4 of these fittings. the cool part with a setup like this is you will never need to bother with ballasts again.
