Hi everyone, I have a 10watt LED light I got from Builders, and have seen pretty much no plant growth. Do I need to buy a pink LED light?

You see in planted aquarium they usually use three colors red, white and blue because chlorophyll absorbs red, and blue the best
So you use should get a red light

Go to the China mall and pan's electronics if you are in Johannesburg and test there colors look for the color you like
I use these ones on a 10 gallon aquarium [IMG]
There are three colors in the purple one here is a photo dimmed [IMG]
And my plants are growing very well.

Yeah - so those Major tech, ip65 10watt LED are not really all that great, if you can add like 3 to a 3ft you might get some growth - but I have not had any success with them -- work ok as room heaters. They are ok to fill in but not much for growth.

With LED - ad this is only what I have seen and played with - you can overcome most short comings by just adding more light. This is not the real goal right you are looking for the best power consumption for good growth.

I run different lights on different tanks - oldest lights are some t5 opple tubes - non LED, then I have strip light - ala DIY, fluorescent replacement LED "tubes| spot lights and even normal LED globes. One really needs to experiment till you find what works for your tank. Also the LED lights we get have difference in the different batches - well that is what I suspect - one light might work the one time and not the next.

That specific LED light TIM is no good unless you increase the number of units then you can overcome it's weakness - it does not even measure 10watt when plugged in, well did not for me.

This is what is on the bench for testing at the moment,

The best results for me today is probably the lightworx ... I even stocked up on some.
New on the bench is the 15watt Par 38 - no clue but it is 4000k 1200lm - Lucceco - hope it lasts longer than the 10Watt e27 bulb that lasted only a few months.
The Major tech ... I suspect can work - but it nowhere near the 10Watt of energy that one would expect - well not light into the water.
The new ones - 9Watt Seco 6500k - who knows.

Then the round lights 18Watt and 12 Watt - gonna put one of them on Boyu and see what is what.

For now - I am OK with the lightworx 10Watt units.

I think I still prefer my DIY LED strips to be totally honest.

Thomas, I think the story is simple - if you want 100% predictability - then go with an aquarium LED light, if you into experimentation - ok with failure, open to learning ( and maybe spending a bit more in the long run) then the hobby - and that includes finding the lights that work for you needs some effort.
