    Hi there all.

    I'm from Vryheid KZN.
I've been around Fish tanks for a very long time, but decided to get my own when I moved into my own place. I've always enjoyed aquariums as it is fun to watch them as it is very relaxing. My tank has been running now for about 5 months now.
I have a 4ft tank with the following.
    10x Black Phantom's
    10x Neons
    10x GlowLight
    4x Flame Dwarf Gourami
    2x Coral Blue Dwarf Gourami
    1x Peacock Dwarf Gourami
    2x Angel Fish
    2x Clown Loaches
    1x Algae Eater

I will post a pic a soon as I get a gap too.

This site felt like home when I read through a few of the pages, and also some nice ideas.

    Marius

What will be the ideal lights to buy, ive got about 2 or 3 small plants in. Im thinking of getting the Odyssea dual light unit, not sure if i should get the 90cm or the 120cm, what will be the ideal globes to buy which are not too pricey?

You could DIY your lights quite cheaply. Buy t5 ballasts directly from a manufacturer and get your light tubes from "The Lamphouse". For the endcaps you can either buy waterproof ones or look into using electrical "choc" blocks...

You would ideally want T5's in the 6500k-max 10000k range. Any brand will do. Don't get sucked into buying expensive "plant aquarium" tubes.

    Thanks @Hawk :hatsoff:

Could you maybe give me the exact name of the globes which I will need, I want to give "The Lamphouse" a call and ask them if they have stock and if they will courier, as I'm far away from their branches. Do you think a 3ft or 4ft would be better? And will 2 globes be enough for a 4ft tank (1220x45x45)?

That's quite a wide question :amuse:.

The tubes I got from them are Sylvania, Osrams, Radiums (depending on the kelvin you go for - I run 2x6500k, 8000k and a 10000k). I run 4x54w tubes on my 4ft 300l with pressurised co2 injection so I would suggest you start with 2 tubes.

As to what size tubes, 54w are approximately 1170mm long so it could be a problem if you don't have room in your canopy.

If you are far from the lamphouse then rather order 4-8 tubes so you have backups if you blow one.

Same with the ballasts - order 3 from a manufacturer then you have the second to hook up if you want and the 3rd as a backup.

    HTH

Does it matter which 2 globes to start of with? I had one 10 000k globe which fused.

It's a personal choice. I quite like the 10000k as they take away the yellow tinge from the 6500k...

Replace the Actinic blue bulb. It's for marines for corals. It will cause algae.

    @Hawk
Thanks for all the help so far. The white globe that comes with is that a 6400k or 10 000k bulb?

I see the light unit comes with a 10 000k light. Should i rather get another 10 000k tube or a 6500k tube?

Must i just ask "The Lamphouse" for a aquarium tube?

    Sorry for all the questiond.
