    Im going to try it. What are you going to use as a medium to grow the plants. Does the plants need direct sunlight, I think so. But wouldn't there be a algae problem with the Fish tank in the sun?

    Hi rickus , you shouldent have algae , but in the first setup you may .
    the plants would use the nutrients in the water and then there is no nutrients for the algea.
    i have a really basic setup that i have going atm , growing mint in there which is only starting to take now.
    colder weather got to the other plants. put the mint in abt 2 weeks ago and i can see its starting to take off.

    mysetup is pretty basic, atm , planning a bigger setup later on ,

    old cast iron bath as the tank, old cooler box with grave and a bit of filter floss in it,

    @Rickus if you go thru that link I put on somewhere they say atleast 4 hous of sun per day what are your basic setup going to be like are you going to use your normal glass tank for the fish and what are you using for the plants. I am using my pool setup for the fish and hafe two fibreglass bathes for the plants, the grow medium wil be about 10mm pebles with normal 4mm gravel you buy at the LFS. That clay the use is a bit expensive for me .

    @KennyG,

    Would you be willing to do a short write-up on the system. My retired parents are living on a small plot with water being a bit scarce, as well as having a very bad climate. Freezing winters and boiling summers. This might be a option for them to do some of the more difficult veg.

    Nice setup btw.

    ok , some specs:
    the tanks i recycled from a guy who does it as his bussiness. i bought steel to make a frame from a hardware store , plastic sheeting from a company in lyttleton and also the clear roof from a hardware shop. the pump is ur avg pond pump capable of 300L p/h doesnt need a filter because ur grow bed acts as that. the bottom tank is a volume of 300L 2mWX2mLx bout 40-60cm in height. the growbed tank is about 1mLX2mWXa gold halfmeter more in height. for that ive used a mixture of gravel and hydroballs , that way the hydroball growth media doesnt float around and gravel is cheaper and does the same job. once specialised thing i have in my system is the fact it runs on a timer system which leaves the pump doing a flood and drain cycle of my growth bed. but there is a non electrical method of doing the draining and filling of the grow bed. o and of course i have 2 simple aquarium heaters in my tank to keep the fishes metabolism up (theyre tropical) and the greenhouse temp up. plants i just grow seedlings in trays until theyre ready and i feed my fish pellets , they prefer it over veg matter. i think that will cover it im not sure if there is anything else about the system that u want to know , but feel free to ask :) need to raise awareness about this amazing way of organic plant growing with fish :)

    @KennyG - Nicely done man. Look at all those "wasted" tanks you could be keeping fish in :blink1:

    @KennyG - Being part of a food process I assume you cannot medicate these fish? What fish are they? Oh yes, forgot to add - What type of tomatoes are you growing and does it provide enough for the family?
