    hi guys

i have been playing around with aquaponics for a while.

i just have a few questions for you gptys before i carry on.

    1. What fish are you using
    2. Whats your water to fish ratio
    3. At how much do you keep nitrates
    4. Do you use a flood and drain system or constant flood.
    5. What water temps are you getting.

i have a small 300 liter in ground pond, with a small aquaponics setup, with only 6 letuce.

i use leca in my system and a constant flood setup.

My water temps was close to 30 not so long ago, but letuce are turning green now that its cooling down.

My nitrates are below 10, and i do daily topups on the pond.

i currently have 6 gold fish in my setup now.

Planning on getting 6 more and to do a greenhouse over my pond, and to extend my aquaponics.

Also for my final setup i will be using a flood and drain setup. Possibly a n or u syphon setup threw a uni seal.

Will still be using my current pump, as im not going to big. Just to supply my family with vegetables, and to enjoy the hobby and fish, and to create an area where i can go sit and enjoy running water, and maybe even work in a few fish tanks just to spice it up a little.

oh ja, and will be using a gazibo with the sides covered as green house

    Nice setup :)
My husband and I also have an aquaponics system which we need to break down this weekend for the move.
We'll setup again at the new house with a few changes.

Our current system works with a sump to house the pump and extra water, a 200l container for small fish (currently holding fry) and a 250l drum holding the adult fish.
We're raising tilapia in order to eat them and have no plants at present. I was growing herbs for a while but everything died with the heat we had and the fact that the timer broke on the system and kept flooding.
The plants were house in PVC gutter tubes through which the water would run to the drum, then to the container, then the sump and back to the plants.
Our system ran on a flood and drain method which worked perfectly.

The changes we're going to make involve getting a 1000l flow bin, cutting it at the two thirds line, using the bottom for the fish and the top for veggies. This will all connect to the pvc gutter pipes which will house herbs and strawberries. We'll also build a green house to use for winter and I love your idea of using a gazebo to do this.

    sjo, thanks @william

Just fixed a problem i had, because im running a constant flow and water level is deep i installed an air stone.

    Will see what it does...

i see that my letuce is going green, and that there are growth, think i just need more fish in my setup.

50 liter per gold fish at the moment, and nitrates is almost none existent.

i can double up, because theres alot of surfice for my fish, and i do have air stones in pond too.

but ja, i think it will work out

That setup can work, i will just ad a pipe on each level that sucks in air and blow air bubbles threw the pipes.

    could be more effective.

    Think its called a venturi...

Would give oxygen to the system too, which will prevent root rot.

So we have 1000l of water to 1000l of grow bed .
Its flood and drain system .The growbeds are in next to each other and we use pipes to bring it back . The drop motion supplys oxgen to the tank . We had 100 tilapia fingerlings in the tank and it ran amazing we were geting excellent results.you can use any cold water fish gold fish will work well but we used tilapia because you get the added option of fish farming

    @matmochrie93 so its a 1:1 ratio?

it just thinking, how much of your tank water gets drained then? or are you running a sump?

    Yes its a 1:1 ratio

The water drains back in to the fish tank and then is pumped from there to the grow beds. I think its just less than half . So less than 500l Unfortunately its been a while since weve run it and I cant rember accurately the amount drained

    ok cool thanx.

i dont really have the depth to run 1:1 ratio, but will work out, maybe i can try 1:3 which should give me about 100 liters of grow bed
