    Do (or can) snails migrate?

I started up a smalish new tank last week. Okay the tank itself was used, but it was washed and sterilized thoroughly. New clean and washed substrate, new heater, new pump and filter, with new filter material. Clean water with dechlor. Nothing else except a few drops of pure ammonia to start the cycle process. No livestock, no plants.

This morning I found a whopping big snail and a whole bunch of li'l uns clinging to the glass inside the tank!

    How'd they get there?

There's no food or anything except water to attract them. The snails in my other tanks are thriving happily. Nice neighbors, free food, they're not paying rent, and they ignore all my eviction notices.

Why would they leave a cozy pozie like that to trek off into the wilderness and settle in a sterile and desolate new tank?

Pioneering instinct? On the lam? In-law problems? Witness protection? Missionary work? Unrequited love?

    Eish!!

Some aquatic snails are capable of moving short distances across 'land' without drying out. It ay be possible that is may have happened, provided that there was another tank (inhabited with snails, of course) that was close enough.

Dude... if you got snails in one tank, you will NEVER get rid of them in your other tanks. This is just a given!

Throwing salt in isn't such a good solution, especially in a cycling tank. You'll throw the cycle right off, killing the bacteria with the salt increase.
