so iv been toying with the idea the last couple of days of changing the guppy tank into a betta only tank. as iv said before the tank is seriously over crowded, at the moment i do water changes twice a week and i have to regularly clean the filter. i was thinking of adding the gups to my 1.2m as there is already gups in there and theres no way ill be able to easily catch them in there. id then move my betta, Vulcan, to the smaller tank and maybe add 2 females. iv already sent Solex a pm about getting some of his females as iv not seen many up here in joburg and i fell in love with his turquoise females i saw on a thread here awhile ago , and the ones i have seen are not nice looking ones.the dimensions for the tank are 45.5cm long x 23cm wide x 30cm high though im not sure what the volume is, would this be big enough for 1 male betta and 2 females as well as 2 kulis that are the clean up crew for this tank.

the 1.2m stock list is (without the betta):
    1x bristle nose pleco
    2x 3 spot gouramis
    +/- 15x platys
    5x cories
    4x angel fish
    2x apple snails
    14x danios (leopard and zebra)

so do you think it'll work?

i want to rescape this tank anyway so to change it to suit Vulcan wont be to much of a bother.

Hmmmm done this before - added the beta to the guppy tank ... worked OK but guppy became the food supply. Then found a female Beta - thanks Dolhpin - got some fry form the two no I have 4 males (need separate tank or jars) and some females .. Females are OK - males do not play nice. Moral of the story --- if you had an over population in guppies - chances are the same will happen to your Betta effort ... But you can squeeze more guppies into the same tank / volume than Bettas.

    Update:
Thanks for the prompt windfire .. typing this just made we realize the solution - ahh experiment, add the females to a current guppy tank .. add the males one per tank to 3 other guppy tanks - from the 15 minute observation the males are non-aggressive to guppies in large numbers - talking a 50:1 or more ratio here - lets see if the peace lasts.

from what i understand if you add more than one female then the male cant make his mind up about which female to mate with is this right or have i got the wrong end of the stick entirely? besides solex dos anyone else know of where i can get some nice looking lady friends for vulcan? in joburg, preferable not the red and blue combo. i went to see a friend today that does engineering and got him to help me work out my tank volume, when i did it i came up with 40l he came up with 31l of the two though id like to believe mine his is probably more accurate lol, i never was good with maths. so is a 31l big enough for one chilled male and two females?

if i get the go ahead from you guys and i cant find any females i like down here i may have to prevail on some kind capetonian to perhaps courier them over to me? as Solex doesnt courier fish anymore though he says he'll be more than happy to supple them

Don't know about keeping more than 1 female per 1 male per tank ... more than 1 female per tank seems to work. My females are still small ... let them grow out - so that we can see what they look like ... I'll post some pics at some stage.

I've got 5 females with 1 male in my community tank. The male isn't even interested in them at all... He was at first, but after about 3 days, he lost interest.
