Angels.

Good day. I am wondering if Prof still breed with these angels?


I am from Potchefstroom in North West. i have a group of people including me which is very interested in these Angels. If there are available what is the going rate per fish and how many are available?

 

I can't answer the question, but I know Prof Dirk is out of the country (I think in Scotland) for a bit, so you're going to have to be patient until he gets back

Those are a friend of Dirk's, altums. He's selling Scalare angels not altums. Very nice Scalare btw. I had 10 of them in a big tank but had to sell them due to moving house. If he still has some definitely get some!

 

I just want top quality angels and not the common ones always seen in lfs

 

Sorry don't want to hijack the thread here but can someone please tell me where do I find one of those clay cones (if that is what its called) would like to get some for my angles that I want to breed.

 

He doesn't have Altums at the moment. He does sell the best Scalare you will find and for very cheap. You won't be able to sommer find Altums in SA unless you import them.

I hope he gets some of those Mercedes Altums soon

Why dont you use a flat slate Rock to let them breed on it always worked for me.... and I have a few pieces left if you want?

Strange, I think my LFS had those exact angels a month ago, they were much smaller but the vivid colours and unique tail shapes were there

Unfortunately, he sold them all out within a week, I badly wanted those angels but they would not survive so well in any of my current tanks.

@johan008 I believe those pots are just normal terracotta pots from any gardening shop.
Rinse them very well before adding to the tank, I use boiling saltwater (aquarium salt)
just in case of any fertiliser/bug spray contamination

 

Right, seeing that everyone else has had something to say on this thread let me answer please.

I was in Scotland from 29 May to 7 June and in Germany from 18 June to 29 June, so I am still feeling the effects of all this flying..... however, I visited Oswald Hanke to see his discus in Germany and was blown away, but more about that later.

The angels in the pic are from Simon Forkel in Germany, they are Rio Atabapo Pterophyllum altum angels and you would have to pay an arm and a leg to land those here. I do breed nice normal scalare angels that are also shown on the striped angel thread, but I do not have some for sale at the moment due to all my travels.

For egglaying you can buy tall pots, called rose pots in SA from numerous garden shops. Juddy, they are never treated with fertilizers or any insecticide sprays as they come from a kiln in which they are burnt and in which not a single insect will ever survive, so you can use them directly and washing in salt water is not only unnnecessary but actually not good as it will introduce salt which you do not want or need.

Juddy, altum angels will not have been sold by any petshop in Cape Town, believe me, I would be the first to be informed if they were to be imported into the country. There have been some so-called Peru altums coming into the country which may just look a little similar and may fool someone who does not know altums, but the name is a con job, they are scalare angels all the way and definitely not altums, you can search for other threads on TASA about this.

So, no altums, but good solid wild type scalare in future, yes maybe. I will advertise them if they become available in a few months from now.
