Hey all fellow aquarium keepers, I have some unexpected and yet exciting news. My 2 angelfish seemed to have been listening to some Barry White while I was sleeping, and the result is the side of my filter is covered in eggs.

I really wasn't expecting this, and I have zero experience in breeding Angelfish. What are the basics? I read something regarding feeding the fry brine shrimp 5 days after they hatch. But do I leave them in the tank? Or do I move them to another tank?

And do I need to put a divider in my tank now?

Don't disturb them. They become very protective over their eggs. If you wanting to raise the fry then I suggest taking them out once they have hatched or after a few days and separate the fry on their own tank while feeding brine shrimp

The only thing that worries me, is the other fish getting attacked by the Angels, and the filter sucking in the fry after they hatch. I can turn off the filter in the lid for a few days, but I would rather try and avoid doing that if I can.

hmm good point, should probably turn it off.
And seperate the other fish with a glass cut to size, glass is cheap..
Then you can either do regular water changes or get another filter.
I have a small sump filter that I'm selling, you could try it out..

I also have a bunch of brineshrimp eggs.
They are kinda a mission to breed but they will feed the fry.

I would of setup a small bare bottom tank with sponge filters, water from the main tank, heater set to the same as main tank and 1 airstone(Position the airstone so the bubbles rise near the eggs).Take the cover with the eggs off the filter and put it in the small tank. They should hatch in 3-4 days.Stress of any type can cause the adults to get nervous and eat the spawn that's why I would take them out.Add Methylene Blue to the water as a fungicide.Fry will be in a wiggle stage for about 5 days after they've hatched, don't feed them untill they become free swimming. When they have hatched you can just put the filter cover back.

Don't stress about cycling the tank, this is sortoff a emergency.Do 10/15 % water changes per day using main tanks water.

have 2 little canisters of eggs, they probably have thousands of eggs and I used very little of em, got em for R90 each will sell for R70 each I guess..

Then the sump filter has a heater, pump, pipes, lots of ceramic rings, perlite, wool, pool filter sand, river sand, some vermiculate, zeolite and baked clay.
It's worth about R870 but I don't mind offers lower than that..

Always exciting when one's fish lay eggs.

Unfortunately, first time Angels lay, it's often a failure. It can take them a few goes to get it right.
If there are other fish in the tank, it is almost impossible to raise the youngsters in a community tank. Something else will most likely eat the eggs or small fry - often at night.
If it was me, I would try and partition off this section of the tank. You don't want to be fiddling with the filter to move it and end up compromising the filter itself. Some sort of plastic mesh would work well. Allowing water to flow from the tank into the filter.

I found mashed egg yolk a very good first food for fry. Cheap and easy to make.
It does tend to get a bit messy if you over feed. So cleanliness (frequent hoovering with daily water changes) is essential.

Ha Ha Ha!!! Good one! Congrats Dad!

BTW, I would stop the filter that you're using in order to save the fry. Just pop in another filter and your problem is solved! Remove all other species from the tank. Angels are good parents and will raise their fry for you... Good Luck!

Crushed flake food will be fine for them, you don't need to go to the extremes with brine-shrimp etc.

The angels are very territorial at the moment. Nothing gets close to the side of the tank. It's only the Glow fish that gets chased every 5 min. I'll let nature take its course this time round. I stopping the filter and replaced it with a massive sponge filter for now. We will see what happens. bbea435023d97afab3162c0086363b86.jpg

I wouldn't switch off the main filter unless your sponge filter has been properly cycled.

Perhaps you can gently put some ladies stockings over the intake to prevent the fry from being sucked in.

Thanks, I was worried about switching it off. So I was lying awake last night wondering what to do. I grabbed another pump this morning, put a sponge filter over the suction, and hey presto, filtration sorted. 7b5177807da9e48643cc79701240e2b2.jpg

    Congratulations @Edward Lewis

I think the advice given has covered basically everything
If you want to raise the fry, as has been said, you will have to take them out or they will be eaten
Best is a bare bottom tank dedicated to them

    Good luck

Well, this morning all the eggs where gone. Can only think the other fish in the tank got to them. But that is the problem with a community tank I suppose.

However, now the buggers are super aggressive, and are really being bullies in the tank. I am thinking of moving them to a spare tank I have that is large enough for them. But what are their needs regarding filtration? And I use an ordinary sponge filter? Or must u use a hob filter?
