Angel Fish Tank

Hi all, I been thinking - ever since I have seen Solex69's beautiful Angels - that I would like to get some myself (species tank). Just thought I would draw from all the experience out there as I start to plan
Firstly I haven't got much space - but the space I do have will fit this tank quite nicely: http://www.juwel-aquarium.de/en/lido437.htm
It's a 120 liter, 61cm wide, 41cm deep, 58cm high. Is this big enough for angels - if so how many could I comfortably keep in this size. Are they a species that will grow only to the size of their tank? Also are the different types of angels the same adult size - or do they vary?

Hmmm... interesting thread. In theory you should be able to keep a pair of angels in there, but the tank is pretty narrow.

I would suggest you try get into contact with Veegal and Zafgak... they are in your part of the world. I'm assuming you from CT if you've seen Solex69's tank. I'm surprized you even saw the angels... That tank was suppose to be collected from Gert in DECEMBER already.(Solex, if you read this... give gert a nudge... post that tank for sale here on TASA! LOL)

ANYWAY... I'm diversing.

A lot of people will possibly disagree with me, but let me explain. 120litres, with suitable filtration will possibly house a pair of angels. BUT the problem comes in getting a pair! If you can find someone who is able to give you a pair that has alread become a mating pair, then great... you're one step closer. Otherwise what I would suggest you do is get 5 or 6 juvenile angels, and when you notice a pair forming, sell the rest. In that size tank the pair will pick a LOT on the other tankmates.

Bearing this in mind, when they do start mating, you will find that they may even become aggressive towards other fish, so you would need to pick the tank mates VERY carefully.

I personally would rather advise you to go the dwarf cichlid route... as they are also stunning fish, and will make a beautiful main feature to that tank.

As to the adult sizes of the different species of angels, I would leave that up to Veegal to respond.

LOL, he knows he needs to get his tank Ash...we just need to get to it. I've now got 2 x Breeding pairs in the tank and both of them have spawned. You can just imagine the fighting that happens in this tank. Having 5 firemouths in here also doesn't help the cause

 

Just a reminder, all strains of the commen Angelfish that we find in most tanks are from the same species (Pterophyllum Scalare). Therefore they grow to the same size and can also interbreed. In this way they are very similar to Discus. Other Angelfish that is not as easily found and a great deal more difficult to keep is Pterophyllum Altum, commonly known as Altum Angels. They are much more difficult to keep and breeding them is said to be even more difficult than breeding Discus.

 

i have a species tank of angels, you can keep up to 5 angels in there and let them grow to almost full size but as soon as they pare you have a problem, it is best to let them grow up together for this will make them most tolerent of each other once they mature and start to pair. but having an aditional tank is very handy if you want to breed, angels that arent breeding may be kept with smaller fish such as tetras. mine are very happy this way and have bred twice, they're beautifull.

and remember, other angels will eat the fry, so remove all other angels from the tank if you want to have any hope of breeding.

They are pretty easy to breed if they live in good conditions
