So something sad happened today. I noticed that one of my striped p.scalare showed an extended papilla. She was also pecking at Java fern leaves so I assumed I had a spawning pair. I was looking for the male, but the other angels wasn't really accompening her and no other angels had extended papilla. Later I noticed that she was doing practice runs on the leaves and very aggresive towards two of the other angels.

(I have 4 angels; 3 striped and 1 golden. 2 of the striped are about the same size and the golden a little bit bigger and the remaining striped the largest.)

The only one she wasn't aggressive towards was the largest striped. Later on she started laying eggs, but none of the other angels fertilized them.
She started fanning the eggs and chasing away other fish aggressively, except of course the largest angel.
She was kinda staying close to him, probably to try and get him/her to fertilize the eggs.
Then the largest angel started biting her sides and she didn't swim away or bite back, so then I separated him/her to a holding net since I noticed some of her scales came off.

Has any of you ever experienced any behavior like this ?

Oh and by the way it was the first spawning from the group.

Angels have been incorrectly labelled in my opinion. They are far from angels. They are just downright devils. So what you are experiencing is normal. They get very very aggro during spawning. He may not have been sexually mature enough to fertilize.

Don't worry. There wll be plenty more attempts. Just what the aggression though. It can turn nasty.

Yep happened to me. Girl layed eggs bug the other one (m/f, dunno) is still too small so the eggs were infertile. I had to remove the other one due to extreme aggression :( But it's back to normal now :)

Happening to me at the moment with my second pair. The male is way bigger than the female. The female is laying eggs, but the male is not interested at all. He is not aggressive with her either. Just ignores her. I think it is a learning curve and I am not too worried about it. They are alone in their tank. Then again, they did not pair up naturally like the other pair that is successful. This is the male left over and I just bought a female for him. Maybe he is not impressed with my choice...

The more I think about it, the more I think yours is not a pair to the full sense of the word either.

OK thanx guys, the eggs are gone this morning and I placed the big angel back and so far aggression seems alright.
I've heard they spawn every 25 days.
So does this mean she will lay another batch? She still looks a little plump in the abdominal area.

Mine spawn like every 10 to 14 days, when no eggs is present.

The correct behavior of a spawning pair is: The female lays a row of eggs. The male is waiting behind her and as soon as the row is laid, she moves away and he moves in immediately and fertilize them. If he is off to one side, not watching her every move, it is not going to happen.

Remember if you want to wait till they are bigger before you try to breed, turn down the temp to about 25*C. When your temp is 27+ *C then they get stimulated or something and will spawn even if it's not a breeding pair. That's what @Dirk Bellstedt told me.
