And now for something completely different...

This 2 ft tank was just standing vacant, so I decided to play around a bit.

I don't know if there is enough light with the 3 a led undercounted unit that's mounted 30cm above it? It is on for 18 hrs a day though, so let's see what grows.

There are couple of shrimp in the tank, just to keep the bacteria levels up, but I haven't chosen any fish for it yet. I do have an idea though.... Let's see if anyone else has the same idea;-)

Dont be confused by the background. It's actually a mirror with another tank reflecting on the bottom right side...

 

I like it... I'd say a Betta tank or a shoal of Harlequin Rasboras and some Cory's

Interesting concept. Why not hide the bonsai pot with rocks? It is an island style scape, but with the bonsai container, it looks a bit out of place.

 

I agree with you that as a conventional aquascape, it does look very strange having a man made object in it. As with any design concept, it won't appeal to everyone. For my part, it works because the bonsai pot creates the boundary of the design.... the boundary which is usually determined by the aquarium wall. This in turn makes the outline of the plants a continuation of the frame. So basically it's like a photo or painting in a floating frame. What will create a new dimension, is when there are fish darting in and out of this frame.

 

I think a school of 20 threadfin rainbowfish. But then I am kinda bias towards them.

 

Oic, so basically you are framing the planted bonsai pot with the water / tank that is surrounding it. Nice! Would be interesting to see when the plants have filled in more, would create a nice scape!

@Broder - I think that is brilliant - love the idea. The only thing i would do is move that ugly heater around to the back of the Bonsai pot so you don't see it!!!

 

Any suggestions? I'm still thinking a school of Kuhli loaches... Never had them before, but I think they would probably make the underside of the pot their home? Would be cool to watch them sticking their heads out if they do

Yeah, that could look cool. I'm going to have to settle with just the sand though as 3w of light won't grow any carpeting plants that I know of? I may randomly place some black oval rocks on the sand though..

 

The simplicity is what makes it work for me so don't overcrowd with fish and plants. O and I would leave the surrounding sand neat and clean, no plants or it would just be another planted tank with a pot in it.

Very nice and simple, I love it. Can't do a Betta, cause then you can kiss your shrimp goodbye.

A bunch of chilli rasborras, or perhaps rainbow danios, even a school of cardinal tetras perhaps?

 

I've never been a huge fan of bettas, mainly because I think they look quite hybridized, but then again this is a fairly "man made" looking concept and one may just look right in place. So my choice is between it and a school of Kuhli loaches now. I'm actually leaning towards the better betta idea Shrimps are not a problem. 2 of my tanks are overrun with them.

 

What colour would look good in this setup? Considering that I'll probably still add a few Kuhli loaches anyway
