    hi all i bought this little fellow today: can anyone just confirm for me he is a ancistrus?

    Little blur to see. It's a albino sailfin pleco!!! That grows 80cm!
    Just kidding mate. Clear pic and a side shot will be great.
    Also mind me asking where you got him?

    Looks more a standard b'nose compared to a full veil or high fin, but difficult to tell from the pic

    Im with you on this one,, i have 4 of them now (still small) and the fin sizes seem to be the same size, and they are the normal ones.

    im happy as long as he stays small , but boy BBQ did u give me a heart attack when u said 80 cm :afraid: i bought him at a little LPS called animal worx in irene centurion he was the last one they had , the clerk found him while picking up a plant for me. but he sure is a great addition hes already had a good go at the algae in the tank

    They are pretty good at cleaning up algae when they are young, but get lazy as they get older

    Yip and another tell 'tail' sign is that for some reason, perhaps to do with the blood flow/circulation the standard ones tend to have a richer yellow colour than the high fins, but this seems to even out as they get older.. I see this with every batch of young.

    hehehe :blink: great way to get a new tank
    but yeah its alot like a bn/ancistrus cos of the face been more rounded
    but as said, picture pretty bad to tell^^

    agreed, nicer when young, older ones tend to get territorial with the males and rasp on wood more, being heavier they can't sit on most leaves which is a good thing for us I guess, but they still clean on the glass. Great fish all the same. I just have to get rid of about 1000 still, lol

    sorry for the bad pic :p i couldnt focus on him cause of the reflection and didnt realise how bad they were until i uploaded :p but thank your for the helpful ID :D

    its ok :D its still a very cute + helpful fish to have..
    My addiction for these fella are growing by the days
    I am even thinking to have a fish room in the near future with all the diff Ancistrus SP
    hehe
