An exersise in madness rebuilding a new tank for my Jardini Arowana

So during last week while buying crickets and etc at a local lfs in a moment of weakness I made the owners a riduclous offer on
there old broken beaten show tank I am sure some of the west rand guys no the shaded story of the lfs and tank.

well with out saying more , I now have the following .

main tank 200 x 150 x 35 water height 10 mm glass , base craked beyond repair ,so the whole tank will be strpped this weekend and rebuilt.\
32mm stand for above tank , rusted and bent .I took the whole sat afternoon to straighten sand of rust ,apply anti rust and gett in working order.
cabinets moulded and warped ,so stripped down ,sanded and re varnished .
sump 150 x 60 x 35 water height , had 4 non working chambers so stripped and converted to my version of the profs 1 chamber system/

so thus far I have placed the stand in position ,leveled it of (big mission ) added masonite sheets as first base for the tank and sump and added 20 mm poly underneath as well. re asembiled the cabinets .

still to come tank ,plumbing ,electrics etc

go easy on the crit for now still a bit bruised from all the hard work but from tm it will be welcome

wow that looks good, simple version of the profs design ? overflow box, media bed and out flow ? am I correct ?

 

Yes you are spot on , just as big as i can get it the totall media are will be 1.2m x60x 30 .really just one big chamber .

 

I'm still in two minds on how to have the return pipes running . I can run the return back to the left and right of the tank (lenthwise) at the same place as the two over flows and just plumb the one return and overflow slower than the other or
What my gut is telling me to do to give a natural type of flow
Plumb one return at the left Or top with the overflow on the opposite side of the tank giving a constant flowing motion like a river and then add one of my old tunez marine pumps just under the return set on a timer to give fast slow and low current and to help stir up any gunk that floats to the bottom ?

 

This tank looks awesome. Great find and well done on the restoration!

Thanks , tank builder coming tomorrow so we can figure out how much to replace and how much to salvage. I must say whom ever build the tank originally was a bit of a scumbag . The base is only 10mm thick ,2 parts joined in the middle with 3 braces above ,was on un level stand and on a thin layer of poly , the worst to me was that that stand has no supports for the tank in the middle were the two glass sheets were joined.

 

Im surprized this lps is still in business. I recall when the big display against the wall bust.

Im glad to see some good is coming of the tank now. Always thought it was a grossly underused.

 

For sure. I think they survive by there spider and reptile trade. Infact they wanna sell all there fish tank banks if I remember correctly she said 2k each but I'm sure they take a reasonable offer. , it sproberly for the best that they get rid of the fish and stick to what they are specialized in . As for that big 3m tank I recall when it burst man I feel for who ever bought it from them .

Thanks man , we will do the tank Thursday afternoon so I'll add plenty of pics thurs night,then maybe fill it Sunday night but I'll prob only fill it when I get back from business trip next week Friday , I'm all ready running 2 90 l tubs with filter media in to get them going ,to be added to the sump on filling,
