I was sure my female betta had dropsy. She was very bloated and raised scales. So I removed her imediatly from the tank. I add aquarium salt and medicine. Then yesterday I saw she seem to have sores on her body. Then that night a lump of food burst out of her! I thought she would die right away. Now this morning she seem happy and still raised scales but less bloated and more active. She even flared! I have no idea why this had happen. Why? This is the first time I saw this happen. And from her side you can`t tell she is sick.

The disease known as "Dropsy" has quite a few causes - most of them linked to gastrointestinal tract problems - the symptoms we associate with this problem, the bloatedness and raised scales id generally attributed to kidney failure in the fish and it's subsequent inability to maintane it's osmotic neutral balance... Basicly the fish has a high salt concentration and fresh water "flows" into the fish that the non functioning kidneys now struggle to get rid of...

Sores on the body? Hmmnn - a fish in a state like this has a severely compromised immune system, therefor any bacterial infection will now take an oppertunistic chance to get a foothold on the fish... now - that lump of food " bursting" out of her... I mentioned earlier that Dropsy is a gastrointestinal problem.... What i suspect happened here is a small piece of food got trapped in a fold of her bowel - got infected over time and caused the dropsy - what the fishes body did is encyst this foreign body to protect the fish... It is usually around this time that the fish dies, but yours seem to have been able to work it out of its body(Think of a zit popping)... this is actually a very rare occurance - keep her water quality excellent and maybe she might just make it through this... Your main problem is infection now stiing in to the damaged cells of the rupture point

Congrats @Rooivlerkie - you have actually witnessed something extremely rare in our hobby! And I hope she makes it through this.

I don`t think it is a plump of food. This is what has burst out of her.
