Got back from a quick trip to Amsterdam ... found a small petshop - not really a specialist fish store - asked if I was allowed to take some pics ... since I would not be allowed to take anything living back to SA :noworry:.

Just goes to show you that our SA LPS has a LOoOoOoNG way to go before being able to compete with international standards... BUT if our LPS stores ever reach this level of tank presentation, can you imagine the cost of the fish.

    Lovely pics there dude.

I'd love to keep a few cherry shrimp, but alas, I cannot keep them while living here...

those kind of setups would make you make you wanna buy the tank and all. How about the info on the fish pasted above the tanks, this is brilliant, especially if you dont know the fish, info on size etc very cool

cleanliness dont cost u nothing, some petshop tanks are literally disgusting and it shows in the fish,i was at a pet store yesterday and the tanks were so overcrowded the fish were growing abnormally now i dont know if it was birth defects or overcrowding but there were many fish in different tanks with the same problem.i would never buy a fish from there

Glad you all enjoyed the virtual tour - and I can only echo the same sentiment that ANY LFS in SA can have this type of presentation. I had a quick chat with the sales dude - he was stumped that we did not have this as a basic setup in SA since he is a very small pet shop with limited floor space. He also confirmed that all his stock was from the east - I do suppose that they can freight things in cheaper/fresher than we can but still.

I have never been a huge fan of colored gravel but some of the displays actually worked well. Yes they had frogs, turtles even a baby crock, but what I really like was the "planted" tank feeling with real aquarium lighting.

Dude, you were in the "planted tank" capital of the world!
The Dutch has planted tank style and technique named after them. They have a long history of fish keeping and some are absolute masters in all forms of the hobby.
    Lucky guy!
