Amazon Fish

OK here's a question for you geniuses...

whats the most common and uncommon fish and plants from the amazon?

now I am not asking for the 10million differant types of Discus I know there are loads of them...

I am trying to get a list together and want to ask another question later but firstly I need this list...
any help
and the Sponsors miht want to give me thier lists while they at it I have mentioned to Dolphin I want to put a new tank in the new house so let me know guys...

That's a very difficult question to answer...

See this link the FishBase list of fish from Brazil, most of which come from the Amazon. Roughly 3000 species.

Bear in mind the the Amazon is one of the largest rivers in the world, with probably the greatest biodiversity of any freshwater system.

EDIT: Oh. You mean in the trade. Still a truckload of fish though.

As far as I know, Amazon do not ship to SA anymore. Not sure if they've lifted this "ban" yet?

Lizid i am sorry to say but its a mad request. The lists vary from season to season and a lot of fish are bred in asia and locally. i said the list i have in front of me from last week is 6 pages long (2 rows per page) and include South American tetras, catfish, cichlids etc..... along with all the other fish

 

I really dont think it is that bad a request to be honest... I am not asking for a ll the fish from the amazon I am asking for the a small break down of the fish most commenly found in the LFS...

I.E. Discus, Tetras, and a short list of whats in those families, Lemon Tetras Rummy nose, Neons, Black Widows... but if I am realt asking for the world here then dont stress about it I just thought it would be easier to find the info here than on the web...

It's not really an easy topic to answer. The problem is the importers obviously get a huge list of what they can import, or more correctly states, what is available to import from the breeders.

The LPS then has to wade through the blacklist to see that they don't import a blacklisted species, and then also go through the fish to make sure that they will (1) be able to cater for the fish in their tanks, and (2) be able to sell the fish. So I think what they are doing is only bringing in the "usual" fish that you see in the shops, and when they get an opportunity to get something slightly "exotic" that is "easy" to keep, they then get those. (Rams, etc). I personally have NEVER seen any apisto's in any LPS... even the big LPS that are more fish orientated. So basically my answer to your question is basically what you have seen in LPS for the past 12 months is pretty much what you will get. Every once in a while they will try something different, but this is more than likely due to a special request, and they have bought in 6 of the same fish just to make up the minimum order.

Always glad to help out.if the pet stores you frequent are anything like the ones i do all u ever gonna find are angels maybe green and golden severums(deacons),plecos(airwolves)now and then oscars,i dont normally look at anything in the community fish section so i cant help you out with tetras and things.my local store has jaguar cichlids also

 

@Zoom now that makes more sence to me so the big thing here would to speak to someone like dolphin or the guys @AquaZoo, to see what they got for me...

@Oscar I think you are understanding what I am getting at but Zoom is right I will PM Dolphin and see what he has to say maybe he can be more help... besides this is only a long term project anyway...or at least til move in a month or 3...Man these banks know how to drag thier feet...
