Altum X Scalare Angels

Hi all

I bought 2 x Altum X Scalare Angels from Dorry Pets today. They are currently in my 4ft planted community tank. I hope these angels are male & female. Would like to try and breed them at some stage, have'nt bred Angels yet and I like this type alot. They are actually my wife's Angel's. She dubbed them Adam & Eve since they are the first Angels she ever got. Here are some pics of them. Tell me what you think of them...

 

Can anyone confirm these are Altums, and not peruviums again...

 

Here we go again....haha seems luke this is the million dollar question this month. @Charles either way they look good, I use to only breed angels, nice to breed and no worries about seperating fry. What did you pay if I might ask?

 

Those are normal domesticated angels. If I remember correctly from my days of breeding Leopoldi angels Altums and Scalares cant cross breed. @Dirk will be able to shed more light on the genetics.

 

The red eyes also indicates to me that its scalare angles. Also remember Altums gets huge. Like 40+ cm high. Has water parameter demands like discus also.

 

Well, whether or not they can cross these guys are lovely, with that "wild" look, and the top one has a hint of that Altum nose. So even if they're 100% Scalares, they're gorgeous fish and the next best thing to proper Altums.

Plus it's cool that your wife is into fish too. My husband really likes my fish, but he hasn't been asking for his own yet. Maybe in time...

 

Yep its beautifull angels. In a big tank 7 or so of them would be great

@Dirk just called me from an aircraft about to leave for a week long congress. He will try and post a reply during the week but he agrees that these fish are not scalare x altums. There has been no independently confirmed cross breeding of these two species recorded in captivity. There is however a wild type of angel from the upper Rio Negro which seems to be an intermediary species between Altums and Scalares but more work needs to be done on the DNA to confirm.

Yes it will be nice if @Dirk can perhaps verify if these are the real deal "Altum X Scalare" since @Dorry Pets sells them as Altum X Scalare Angels. The price by the way is R100.00 each. There were 10 and I bought two, so now 8 left since I left on 19/01/2013. If they are not Altum X Scalare it would be good to know exactly what specific type they are because I don't want to breed them and sell of some of the fry as Altum X Scalare and then they are not. That is dishonest and unethical and I will never do that. I don't intend to breed & sell them for profit or anything, if I do breed them it will be more for experience and if other people would like to own some of them one day. Like I said, I've never bred Angels before. I did do research on how to and I know a local breeder I can go to anytime for advice and he has given me advice in the past on breeding various type of fish. Side note, got my first handfull of Java Moss and 500g Tin of BS eggs from him.

 

I'll bet you a case of beer they are normal scalare... nice scalare but non the less scalare
