My son has a small dwarf puffer tank (1 x dwarf puffer), the tank has Green algae growing on the glass and some sort of brown rust like growth on the pants.

He keeps the lights on on this tank for extended periods (10+ hours) - So I know this is an issue (I will be setting up a timer for his lights)...
Is there anything else I can do to help reduce algae in this tank? Since shrimp and snails are snacks for this little guy I can't really add a cleaning crew...

    Hi,

I read on Aquarium Fish: Tropical Freshwater Fish and Saltwater Fish Info and another site that the recommended tank mate for playing cleanup crew is the Otocinclus Catfish, Otto Cat ,but most still admit that the little puffers might nip at their fins still. Also read where some people had success with full grown Amano shrimps, but might still not work out.

Unfortunately have no personal experience in the situation.

A bristle nose or better yet Oto's will do the trick.

Brown dust algae is also known as diatoms...and common in newly set up aquariums. Oto's will eagerly eat it all!! Green algae...if it's dust algae they will also readily chow it...if it's GSA...get yourself a bank card and some elbow grease ;) Stay away from magnets...they only scratch the $hit out of your glass...bank card or razor will work wonders with GSA

I haven't seen Oto's around for a while in the area where I stay...
The bristle nose isn't an option as I am planning to move the puffer to a slightly smaller tank so we can convert the 2ft to a shrimp farm...
