Oops!!!... Pond algae block by Science International.... One block treats 200l of water.....

I've just put about 70% of one block into my (inside garage) aquarium (130l), and within seconds,.... (deffo under 1 minute)...... all my Golden Apple snails (8 of 'em) were laying upside down completely extended out of their shells..... I immediately removed them to other tanks, where it looks like they're not recovering..... The fish in this tank looks allright though.

Nowhere on the container is any statement that you must not apply where there are Aplle snails present.......

I'll keep a check though to see if it is effective to remove algae.... this specific tank is infested with hairy algae.

If the algicide is killing your snails then it in all likelihood contains high concentrations of copper. This type of algae treatment is highly toxic to the snails but also have major negative effects on the fishes (it will sterilize then), on the plants and on the filter and these treatments belong into the museum of aquarium treatments. They are more dangerous than they do good. I do not know how such stuff can still be sold.

I would check the pH as this may be too low in this tank. I would also check the lights that you have, if you have bright white lights they stimulate algal growth like all hell (10000 k lights in particular) and then if you keep a high fish load and do not do enough water changes algal growth is also stimulated.

Whatever you do you should do a very large water change on this tank as you must get rid of the copper, what a mess!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
