somebody sent me one of these, it's brand new, in i'st original box. he'd heard that i was toying with the idea of a planted tank.
    i'm afraid to open it!
    why?
    1. don't know how much electricity this thing will CHOW
    2. i think it needs to be suspended, not sure how to
    3. i know this guy is after my clown loaches!

Does anyone have one of these?
any info will be greatly appreciated

Don't wanna open until I have more info, if it's for marine, don't want it, if it can grow plants, yes I'm willing to try.
    Worried about electrical consumption, though.
I hope there's a forum member with one of these...

    1. don't know how much electricity this thing will CHOW--- look for how many watts it uses, the higher the watts the higher the electric bill
    2. i think it needs to be suspended, not sure how to--- you can buy suspension cable kits at builders

use your imagination, suspension is not alot of work, depends on how heavy the unit is too,
well that depends on you too as to how many is too many, although being a metal haelide i think it will be alot!! tell us what the consumption of the lights are then we can work out what it costs.

I opened the box a few minutes ago, and it's got:

    2 x 54 T5 tubes
2 x 150 Watt metal halides that can swivel
    2 x LED clusters
    Steel suspension cables

    okay, the pics:

That's a fair amount of power and will be noticeable on your bill..

looks like something my uncle had on his marine can be very costly with the amount of power it needs

This is a marine setup. I have yet to see a planted lighting setup with moonlights and there is no mention of red or blue led's which are key to plant growth.

interesting thread link, I like that unit which tells you how much power you consume annually, may be a good idea to get one.

So this unit is actually for a marine setup.
I'm already running 7 tanks, I don't think I should be adding this unit to my electricity bill!
I wonder if anyone would be interested in buying it, I'm planning more tanks, none of my tanks are show tanks, I need to use the energy for filtration.
    What to do?

I was looking at a lighting system with red & blue led's for planted tanks (I think!) very very pricey!
I wonder if aquarium led lighting prices are gonna come down anytime soon, or else i will have to shelve the planted tank idea?
Maybe I should stick to vallisnaria for now, I'm even killing the anubias. Java fern barely survives. I got brown fingers.
