Sorry @darryn - no amphibians - indidgenousor exoticmaybe kept as pets in SA... This is due to a certain fungus that is decimating Amphibian populations at an alarming rate worldwide...

On the reptile forums there are many people who keep frogs ....
Surely people would not be so open about disclosing this if it were illegal?

There is actually a sub forum on a South African website dedicated to amphibians.....

From what I understand, for certain frogs, you may have them in your possession, but you may not transport them.

    Yeah, only in South Africa.......

As far as the blacklist goes, without a permit, you may not have any species of amphibian in your possession, this species included. And according to this particular forum's rules, the discussion of the husbandry amphibians is not permitted.

Is there somewhere that I can get hold of the official (up to date) blacklist, as well as the laws regarding it?
The 'blacklist' that is quoted is from a post almost two years old.

    Okay...

Is there a place on the internet where I can download the 'official' document?
Or is there somewhere I can collect one?

For now, the blacklist that you see here is the exact same document that applies these days. Although the post is old, and indeed that list is old, a new list regarding what isn't allowed in the country hasn't been made law yet.

So as it stands, what you see there is law.

    Thanks for that.
But all things being equal, I would still like to get a copy of the official document.
Where would I be able to find it? Or is the official blacklist just hearsay?

Its in one of the government Gazettes, but I am not 'legally minded' enough to know how you would get hold of a copy? You could try contacting the DEAT and see if they can point you in the right direction? Henk is the TASA expert when it comes to legalities, so he should also be able to point you in the right direction?

It is not just hearsay, but is indeed an actual law. As has been mentioned before, if you are caught with any BL species (without relevant permits) you can face upto 10 years in prison, and/or R100,000 fine (regardless of how likely or able they are to actually do so?).

    Regards
    G!

Go to the Cape Nature Conservation and speak to one of the staff who deals with the holding permits of wild and endadaged species, same permit you require to keep snakes. I use to know someone there but cant think of her name right now, but they will be able to provide you with a list of reptiles and amphibians that are blacklisted. Short of becoming a zoological institution and becoming a member of PAAZAD I doubt you will be able to keep them.

Hi Darryn, you can download this off the internet. I had a copy but can't remember what search string I used. Do a google search, or alternatively contact Henk.

Thanks Gareth, Shakes and Linxie for the positive input.
My problem is that there are many people who shoot someone down as soon as a 'blacklisted' species is mentioned, but at the some time, that same person has blacklisted species in their own tanks.
But then again, I am just a noob here, so what do I know?

I'm sorry if I appeared to be doing that, Darryn.

I have at one point kept blacklisted species, not to mention even openly spoken about them on this forum without knowing what I was doing wrong! It is, however, important to let members know what the law is and out standing point on this topic before things get out of hand (there have been a few heated arguments about the blacklist around here...).

    @ SalmonAfrica
I wasn't referring to you or any of the members who have replied to this thread. :)
I am sorry if it came across that way.

It's just that I would not like to get myself (or anyone else for that matter) into trouble based on 'hearsay'.
I am very much a black and white type of person. No grey areas. Hence the reason I want to get hold of 'official' documentation, to cover myself.
Maybe I should have rather started a new thread requesting info about obtaining the blacklist and closed this thread.
