Hey HeyI am planning on building a home theater room with projector, comfortable seats and big speakers. Its going to be a very dark room so a nicely lit fish tank would look nice .My question is will the bass from the speaker’s affect the fish in anyway? I don't want to subject them to torture just for the sake of a good looking movie/gaming room.I doubt water will "transmit" the sound wave but you never know.

Sound waves actualy travels rather well in water and the fishes lateral line will definitely pick it up.

I have no idea how it will affect them though.

    Hey Franna

I doubt it would have much of an Impact unless you really gonna pump the sound. I noticed very little change in my tank when I had it in the lounge.

    But see what others think...

I've got one of my tanks in my tv lounge which has a pretty decent home theatre system and when good music, rugby games or when I play guitar hero I turn up the volume high. To be honest I've looked into the tank and didn't notice one fish swimming or darting off to the beat or bass. Or its not like when you tap on the glass with your finger and they shoot off.

I think it depends how close the speakers are to the tank. If the bass causes ripples in the water then I would imagine that that cant be good for the fish. But if not then I personally dont see a problem. It will be interesting to see what other people think.

Sound is air pressure. Lower frequencies create a lot of pressure, you can actually feel lower end frequencies. If your sub woofer is placed close to the fish tank, it will most definitely have an effect on the fish. Sound travels even better under water because the water is more dense than air. If your windows are rattling because of the bass, then your tank will rattle too. This will make your fish uneasy. It will stress them.

Place your sub woofer on the complete opposite side of the room as to where your fish tank is. Place it on the floor, in the corner of the room too. (It will make the bass even better in the room).

Almost every other weekend my opposite neighbours kids play their car music so loud it rattles my house windows but the fish don’t seem to be bothered
The din irritates me more !
They more jumpy when a truck's shadow passes the tanks

As @Sean J said it will have an adverse effect on the fish. The vibrations caused by bass range sounds will affect the fish. I have the write up somewhere of a sound engineer that did a home study on this matter. He found that over short periods (movie length or so) the fish appear to become edgy for a day or two after the test. Long exposure like playing loud music the whole day seemed to confuse the fish and they appeared disoriented. I personally have found that my malawi inmates are more prone to noise than their south american hombres on the other side of the room.

Guys im running a 7.1 Channel Yamaha amp with large floor standing jamo speakers and a huge jamo subwoofer and have been in different setups for years .my Arowana tank has been in the lounge all this time .with no visible effect on him. However I have added double polystyrene layers under the tank to cut down on any possible movement from the vibrations as I think this could be the greater danger of glass moving and cracking.if it is loud enough to shake and move windows it sure can shake the tank aswell .remember bass from a sub is non directional so it will travel everywhere in the room ,your main and surround speakers tie the sound together to the bass to sound directional .putting the sub in the corner will just take away from the acoustic quality given more thud and less quality low range .your sub should always be in the centre of your front and back sound stage. And u and your fish we love it . My 2cents

I have found that if I add too much bass then there are no fishes left in the tank, if I turn up the woofers my dog goes wild, and if I use my tweeters, my cat goes ballistic.

Man you guys can talk the biggest amount of bull-, or no sorry bass-..... imaginable.

    My 2 cents worth,

    Dirk
