    Hello Prof

I read a thread a while back wherein you advised that you kept these fish...i am able to get a group of ten. how easy are these fish to keep?i was thinking of keping them in a 40litre tank...low light, java moss. what temperature and water conditions do they need?

    Hi Sarf

I've moved this thread because the Professor's forum is intended for specialist questions only... as explained in the disclaimer above his forum, he has limited time to answer questions and therefore we ask that only questions specifically requiring his knowledge are posted there.

I can help though - these are great little fish. Not too demanding but I would really prefer it if you went for a larger tank. With a group that size you can expect a few spawns too. :)

Read up on the basic requirements here on Seriously Fish.

    Cheers :)

These are fantastic little guys to own! I'd agree with Tim though, 40L is a little too small for a group of 10. I'd rather go more for 80L. I guess though it depends on the actual dimensions of the tank? Depth is not as important as width, but obviously they need a certain amount of depth to feel settled.

As for water, again as the link Tim suggests, pH is not that important, as long as extremes are avoided. They are pretty adaptible, as long as they are not introduced from Hard Alkaline water to Soft Acid water (or vice versa) too quickly. I'm assuming they are available in Cape Town, so they should already be settled in our softer water? You should not have too many issues acclimatising them, but do it slowly, mixing in some of your tank water before releasing them, and you should be fine? This has worked for me with several 'sensitive' species. Once established though, they are not so sensitive.

If you don't mind me asking, could you maybe PM me where you can get them? I'd love to get a few myself.

    Regards
    G!
