    Good morning all... I have had 5 Discus for 2 months now,that have been kept with my stingrays as both require more attention to water quality, they aredoing really well, however i have decided to set up a tank just for them andwould like some advice please.. What would the right size tank be? Have heardthat the tank should rather be higher than long. I have also read that Discus don’twant allot of current, so what would be the best filtration.. Any help would beappreciated..

    Hi, I would say to allow 50lt per fish.
    -They do prefer deeper tanks rather than shorter wider tanks, however , I have kept them in 60cm high tanks and they seemed pretty happy.
    -I used a canister filter on my tank and that didn't seem to bother them. As long as you don't have any extra power heads in the tank they should be fine.
    -With regards to water conditions, I use to keep my ph just below 7 although I know of some friends who kept them with a ph of 8.
    Hope this helps you .

    @Cesar,
    Lots of good info here on the Forum - Discus section.
    In particular, pay attention at the posts from Dirk and Marco.

    A longer tank is better than a tall one.
    Min 40L per adult. Some say more.
    A standard rated filter for the tank should be ok. You don't want so much flow that it flattens the fish. On the other hand, you need sufficient water turnover in the system.

    You should ask @Dirk or Andrew ( @pHish_man ) the more technical questions. How much water depends on what filter you have. I.m.o. you should look at a sump as you can have slower powerheads due to the larger surface area in the filter. Both a win for discus. The more water (and thus larger the tank) the easier it will be to maintain a stable environment for them. When you pay R200 + a fish you should not go cheap on the home for them. Get something a bit bigger, I would do a 500L tank for 5 discus and then with a sump you could use like a 1000L/h powerhead.

    I have a 750l tank so there is quite a lot of flow to turn over the water frequently. I run a pvc pipe across the tank with lots of holes and it means there is not a single spout. Works well. Discus bigger is better.
