Advice : DIY Substrate for nano Planted Tank

I need some advice regarding substrate for my nano planted tank which i am planning.

I do not want to buy the expensive substrate. Please advise me on a DIY substrate i can do for a planted tank.

Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Well I have a recipe that worked well for me but lots of people say it goes bad quickly my rank run for 3 years and got better growth with it An my other tanks with expensive substrate. Pottigsoil, canadian peat, and vermiculite. Soak the vermiculite and squeeze the air out of it. Use twice as much vermiculite and peat as pottigsoil and cap it with a fine gravel

 

Thanks for that. I am only having a problem sourcing the vermiculite. Any substitute for that?

I hae potting soil and kitty litter in my 4 ft and that has been going for more than a year now. Can't see any problem with Rayno's advice though.
