    Hello Everybody,

We would like to have a photo competition. If you guys could throw around some ideas in this thread about how what kind of categories we should split it up into (i.e. planted, discus, etc.), or any other ideas in general, that would be great.

This is awesome news, we had a discussion a few weeks ago about the forum competitions, we agreed that Low tech and high tech should be separate competitions to give the low tech guys a chance. maybe tank size should also be considered. i don't know about breacking up fish in defferent species.. maybe 1 major fish category. just my 2 cents, its awesome to see sponsors getting involved this way.

on apsa there is low tech tanks kicking high tech tanks asses. just my opinion. can make both look just as good. i dont think the photo comp must be the same as those already on apsa. its a photo comp anyway so it must be about the quality photo taken and technique being used. imo. so it ca be like a themed photo comp each time. like this month a nature shot or landscape, and the next theme something like mysterious?

but how many of those are there really.. i don't think you would be giving fair chance to all if you don't separate them, and again with shot quality or picture quality you are only catering for certain members that are lucky enough to have decent cameras. some of us still using cell phone cams. thats why i would say create a separarte category for "high definition" pics..

its all about technique. you can have all the equipment in the world if you dont use technique your just going to have another tank. MASA as photo comps. and its themed every month its another theme doesnt have to be about the best tank.

Let wait for some more ideas from the others. All the ideas so far sound good. I think we can split it up and do different things at different times. And it would be nice to get the forum member to do the voting with a poll or something like that.

Well there is a program somewhere that has micro shots of something like shirt's weave etc where the owner posts the pic and others need to guess what it could be. I know this doesn't really fit into the topic entirely, but it can be fun. I appreciate the fact that not everyone will have the means to do this but there's lots of members with pretty high tec cameras that can take the pics and the members can participate in the comp even if they do not own such equipment. Could be fun.

I would divide the competition into 4 groups:
    • Best Planted tank: For those people who like to focus on aquascaping, and who redo their tanks on a regular basis.)
    • Best Community tank: For people who likes to focus on the fish side of things but do not have a massive amount of plants, since we aren't all green finger inclined or experienced enough.
    • Best Newbie tank: Self explanatory.
    • Best Professional tank: Self explanatory.
If you have 4 categories then even a newbie might have a chance at winning something, having just a single category makes it really disheartening for the newbies to go toe to toe with the professionals. Because in the end the chance that they would win is almost zero.

You would be allowed to enter more than one category of course but you can only win in one. Also I would tailor the prizes to the category, that would be a better incentive for better entries, that way a guy with a community tank does not win a bag of substrate which he will never use.

Also the winner picture should get the AD logo in the corner and posted on their website, that way you get your 5 minutes of fame and AD gets traffic and some free advertisement.

I've said this before for our tank competition here on TASA but how about if you split the category into experience ie beginner (0-6months), intermediate (6 months to a year or two), advanced?

How about a bit of a boost for the AD guys and the products they bring for us to play with? A show case on using some of the kit.

    Something like this ...

Above some moss on a ista cultivation disk, 3weeks on ..

    Later Ferdie
