    Hey everyone.

I got some activated carbon with my tank when I bought it a while ago. Its a cheapo bag costing about R27 . Was wondering does anyone still use it on occassion. I know about carbon uses and so on. Just thougt I have got the stuff why not use it. Got some extra space in my one Eheim internal filter 309lph I read the slower the water passes through it the better it works. Also know it can be removed after 4-5 days as it does not take long to do its thing. Any thoughts on this everyone.

Only ever used it to remove meds from a tank, seems you need a lot to actually benefit filtration in general.

@hviviers75 , I have always used activated carbon in all my tanks over the years, running permanently in my filter. I have never had a single issue using it and water conditions are perfect.

If you decide to use it please don't dispose of it after use ,just rinse it out very well and put in sun to dry (reactivating it).
To use or not to use ,its your choice . My ten cents if you have it and have the place for it , put it in, the tank can only benefit from it ,it has no disadvantages . You know what it does .?

If the tank is planted no.... if not well might as well put it to good use :)

From what I've read the carbon is activated by subjecting it to temperatures of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit... doubt leaving it in the sun will reactivate it to any useful degree, but that's my 2c's haha

The rinse and dry works because you are washing off the biofilm, rinsing it exposes the carbon to the water again.

I couldn't agree with you more if you say you did read it , but did you read more and more , the one says bake it in the oven at low low temp , the other one says wash it very well , yours said 2000 degrees Fahrenheit . Hi guys don't read thing and make it your own . And I think if you read correctly it is in initial activation of the charcoal not reactivating , what you are basically doing is washing out the chemicals and letting it dry . This You tube Profs are something , maybe its old school or the old charcoal we use to get sorry .

Yup, I agree. Charcoal absorbs chemicals at a molecular level.
    Doubt sunlight will do much.

    Hi Guys,

Activated carbon is manufactured from coconut shells which are grinded then heated to the point where they are changed to a carbon state, this process is done without oxygen to prevent the carbon from burning to ashes.

    Regards

@FINS , Bud , not a chance man , Activated carbon only lasts about 4-5 months , Then it get depleted , unlike purigen that can be regenerated. You never put it in the sun? who told you that? If Activated carbon is used to long in your filter I leaches out the chemicals it absorbed. Chuck away , As Always - You will get the the guy that sais "I have been doing it for years"
Ja well , My advice , Get purigen

I dont understand you say 4-5 months the supplier says 4-5 days , yours a new brand ???.Good we never had purigen , so I cant comment on that . Its the oldies that made the path to were we are today . So yes if there is something better use it , you are a breeder , you have used carbon before like us, you have experience ???(not purigen) .( not a chance man )
When there where no ..... we used copper sulfate a lot and formaldehyde etc (old boere raad ) were all these new stuff originates from , funny still today you buy any water purifier and there it is old carbon , so excuse me if we where using sh... but that was all we had. I can tell you I have used carbon many many times to take the toxins from the water , washed it and dried it and used it again . So sorry ,can you talk from experience or read . We talk about a Ford you talk about a Mercedes.
I haven't even heard of this , and be assured I have bred and still do more fish then you have ever seen and will see ,without purigen.
Hell man how is that possible, they are still alive what a miracle .
Some guys are sitting there never saying anything no welcome nothing, waiting to deliver a You Tube Prof sentence .Rather welcome the new guys , making them welcome .
There is your way , there's my way there is no right way. From Guppy.com.
End of this for me .lalalalal

Other than remove meds, it also polishes water, and can remove tannins if it bothers you. Given how cheap carbon is, baking it in an oven to "regenerate" it will probably cost more than to buy some new carbon
