AA3006 Digital Thermometer Review

Pro's:

• Cheap around R80 for a unit and about R10 for a replacement battery, which should last you around a year.
• Ease of use one or two button presses and it is set up.
• The sensor probe comes with a suction cup to keep it in place.
• Comes with enough cabling around 1 meter.
• Comes with double sided velcro so you can tape it to any surface.
• Nice big display easy to read from a distance.
• Reading range from -50c to +70c

Con's:

• What the hell people ever hear of a manual or some direction on how to use your hardware properly?
• Maybe it is a Chinese thing but isn't our outside reading suppose to be outside and not inside (reversed) took my awhile to figure out why my heater wast heating the tank properly....
• Clock function? When everything has a built it clock this is rather pointless. A alarm function when the temperature drops below a certain threshold would have been nice.

Are the digital thermometers better than the standard in tank thermometers? I saw a similar digital one but it was suppose to cost R450, thats a bit steep if you ask me, esp if the normal ones work just as well.

 

I agree. Just bought an old fashioned analogue one for R22.95 at PnP.

 

I personally maintain that the best ones are stipl the old fashioned murcery type. I bought one from autozone once... You know those types where you are trying to pimp a vw beetle or golf, butit gave me hugely inaccurate readings when the probe was put into water.

It is accurate if it is out in the open. I simply use it now in my study with the probe outside the window to give me the morning temp reading before deciding what to wear. A 07h00 meeting on a building site in the middle of winter can be excruciatingly painful if you underdressed because your wife had the heater on before you got out of bed.

Wouldn't it be possible to convert an outside thermometer? Because I have one of those where you put the wire out the window and the unit that tells you the temp sits inside, its basically the same thing as the one in the thread.

 

I do not like it. My digi spoiled me with the easy, accurate to one decimal, reading.

@Toby.. i dont kno if u saw my diy.. but this setup cost less than R60 to make.. also i cross ref my trusty old glass therm often as well and its pretty much spot on!

@Zoom, do u think its because u didnt enclose the probe like i did? thats why u got in acurate readings?

 

I thought of that @shihr... But logic tells me that encasing the probe in something would only mae it les accurate. Whatever you are trying to measure the temp of would first have to transfer heat onto the probe, thus loosing energy, or temp in this case. So you are actually getting a measurement a few degrees less than actual. Which in your case corresponds to the mercury one... Which is in fact correct. I say this as my other logic says this thermometer was designed for reading air temp, not water temp, so tbe probe is designed differently. You kay find that you have put just enough coating onto your probe to make it measure and act like a water probe

ive read online and they say that the sensor for the water and air are the same sensors.. also many diy projects ive seen, they do seal the sensor..

@Zoom i dont know abt this hey.. i think that it'll measure temp changes slower but this isnt what we after..transfer of heat onto the probe will eventually stable out thus the whole probe will eventually become the same temp as the water wont it? as theres nothing keeping the probe hot or cold on the inside i think it will eventually read the same temp as a glass therm as long as its not off?

also if you think abt it, a probe that isnt enclosed is more prone to electrical faults because theres water contact? thats the whole reason why i enclosed it..

 

My probe already came encased in an epoxy resin, so thats also why i didnt see the need to encase it any further. No electrical contacts sticking out 'bare' anywhere
