I see on American sites that the African Dwarf Frog seems fairly popular to keep.. Funny I haven't heard much about people keeping it in Africa! But ja, always been a bit curious about frogs in aquariums..

Not legal to keep them without a permit, I think the fine is R100k or 3 years in jail or both, just saying...

All sa indigenous wildlife is protected by default , you can't keep any of it without a license. This applies to fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds as far as I'm aware. It's harvesting is also controlled, with seasons, bag limits, size limits etc and again subject to regulations. Whether people care (we should) or not, and the enforcement thereof is another matter.
From memory, the act that includes the blacklist alludes to all this.

My cousin's got 2 tubs with about 50 of them. When we go fishing at Bloemhof dam for barbel, we use them. Works like a charm for yellowfish in the Vaal river as well. Just feed them earthworms, mealworms, crickets, flies and dog pellets.

Adding to Jwh. If there where no law protecting our indigenous wild life every dick tom and Harry will catch local birds, fish animals, reptiles and so on to sell. There's regulations on fish and is assumed to be used for food thatswhy you can fish. But I always remember back in the days the guys from Parks board walking on the beaches to check up on your fish size and quantities and fishing licenses . But that seems to be something of the past now.

I remember in the days I wanted to keep a local snake, u needed a permit to keep a snake but you need to have a snake before you can get a permit so the only way to get one is to join some South Africa snake association and attend to there weekly meetings then they borrow you a permit to able to keep a snake where you then apply for your own permit and I think after 1 year of attending to all meetings you get your own permit. And that's where my whole idea ended.

On plant species there is a different law because of indigenous plant species you can buy at your local nurseries. Close to all of these plants came from seeds or other plants in the nursery so they haven't been taken from the wild. All our "brood boom" species and I think some Protea species is protected. Thats why chips is placed in broodbome to indentiffy each owner of each tree and for people not to take them out from the natural area.

we know it's just a Plat Anna but in Afrikaans we say, almal word onder dieselfde kammetjie geskeer. The same law applies to all wildlife.

If you got a pond outside chuck it in the pond and you should be able to get away with it. I've got a frog that comes to visit me every now and then. It hangs around for a week or so and then moves on. He's hybernating somewhere since I've haven't seen him for along time.

Hi guys , yes I am familiar with local law wrt indigenous flora and fauna but just had to share this with you guys. The platana was sitting in about 10mm of water and the closest water system is aways from me, so I had to pop him in a tank....temporarily of course.

I have seen albino varients of these guys in the past(more than 10 years ago), sold in shops .

But on a more serious note, with the ever increasing demand for low cost housing and industrial developments, construction companies are utilising water from dams and waterways, which I am sure is a strain on local ecosystems. A local dam that I used to play in as a youngster, is almost but dry. The tilapia,platana,guppies/mosquito fish and another unknown are almost non existant in the dam today.

Taking into account as well as the lack of maintenance and babies that look like adults( I am sure an adult knows what a bin looks like) we are losing our small ecosytems, Litter is not a problem, people are the problem.

Very soon we might only find our indegenous critters in the far east and europe, as our local nature conservation can do little . We need a policing system thats strict and fair at the same time.

    Sorry....I went off the topic

@fishcrazy, very true, I have a factory in Germiston, and all the natural wetlands around here are sterile wrt to wildlife most probably due to acid mine drainage, not even water birds touch down here anymore...you certainly won't find amphibians here, that were probably in abundance before gold was discovered...
