Get a battery powered air pump. When the power goes off, it stays on.

It depends on the size of your tank... I agree with Slagter on the battery operated air pump... but I would go further and say get a UPS.

If the tank is bigger than 1.2m, then it should hold it's heat for a while in summer, so you shouldn't need to backup the power on the heater, but over 8 hours you start damaging the bacteria in the filter.. so I would suggest a UPS MINIMUM to run the air pump and the filter. If you can afford bigger, then a UPS to run the heater as well. You can do without the lights for that period.

As far as I know, Kuhli loaches are best suited to mature aquariums and do better in groups.
I am looking at getting a few myself, but will wait until my new tank is settled.

The air is not the only problem guys!!

It's the bacteria in the filter that starts dying... no bacteria = no filtration. Meaning when your pump turn back on, it will not be doing anything to the nitrogen cycle in your tank... therefore ammonia and nitrites will spike.

From fishkeeping basics we all know that ammonia and nitrite spikes kill fish.

I've read somewhere that bacteria start dying after 2 hours of no circulation. And if memory serves me well, 90% of your filter will be dead by about 6 hours.(Someone please clarrify these stat.) But you get this idea? The airpump is ONE of the things you need to back up.

And in a 72l tank, the heat will drop substantially over 8 hours if the ambient tempterature is colder that the tank water.

Yea also read a similar thing about the filter, what was recommend in the article i read was take take all your filter media out your filter and put them in you tank so they are able to get fresh water, not sure if this is correct too, but it does make some sense :)

It dos make sense in a way... but it will also dirty your tank very quickly. You'll be surprized by the amount of much coming out of the filter.

You could put the airpump outlet under the filter, and hope that the movement of the air over the filtermedium will cause the movement of water. Not sure what this effect would do.

In theory it shouldn't... I just wouldn't want that muck floating around in my tank.

i run my tank on a ups mainly for the power spikes that kept blowing my lights. the 300 ups can run a small intermal filter and air pump for around 7 hours. put a blanket over the tank to keep the heat in.

Wow there is so much more to think about now than I thought. I have a submerable filter it pulls in the the water in through the bottom through a microfilter and then through charcoal then squirts out oxygen and pushes out cleaned water is this sufficient for the tank or do I have to get a bottom filter or corner filter as well the tank is spotless and crystal clear. The last power out last week my two marbled hatchets got ich then treated it and they were fine then we had the lightning hit out the power lines and the schedualled power cut from 7pm wed till 3pm thurs, and now it looks like one has fin rot what do I do now how can I save the quality of my water now. Thanks so much for all the responses they have really been helpful. Well I just saw my zebra chaing the hatchet fish I think its fin nipping actually because there is hardly any tail fin left and I'm sad about that ill isolate it immediatly and hope for a speedy recovery

Yeah I must admit, my school of 10 danios were so busy playing in their school that they didn't bother the other fish at all.
