    That's pretty awesome even though it's not my first choice in pets..... I've been bitten badly too many times by spiders to like them any more...

    This one is my friendly one and she go out shopping at Clearwater Mall a lot just sitting on my shouler or hands. Most people don't even know you are walking with a 26cm spider next to them, till one person notice the tarantula and then news travel fast.

    I'm sure she causes quite a stir, at 26cm odd that really is a HUGE spider. I enjoy it when you can take your pets shopping with you, people always want to look and talk to you about them... So the next time I'm out at Clearwater, at least I will be able to spot you in a crowd (or a crowded around clearing) hehehe.

    When I started to take her to clearwater mall, the guards was a little upset and they became use to the big spider.

    The fun part is when you go to buy something or pay accounts and when they notice the spider they start disapearing. When you get to the counter, there is nobody that wants to help you.

    I really don't have to wonder why. I think that I too would be looking on from a distance, not wanting to get too close... She really is awesome though...

    @Stalker,

    I have to admit I'm not much of a spider fan after being bitten very badly twice and my dad being bitten and nearly losing his finger....

    The White Knee is a lovely looking spider, but I don't think I would be able to handle it up close and personal... grrriiiiilllllll.

    A question: Have you ever been bitten by one of your spiders? If so how bad was it?

    @Skye01 to answer your question: With these guys it is not the venom that is the problem because it is only like about a bee sting maybe a bit worse and only poses a real threat if you are allergic to it... The problem with these guys are however 1) Tooth size and 2) secondary infections...

    Personally i have never been bitten but with a bit respect and with thinking before you do you are safe handling these little guys...

    As for the two times you were bitten and your father my best guess is that those were 1 of 2 little ones that causes problems all over S.A about: They are the Sac Spider (Cheiracanthium) and the little old Violen Spider (Loxosceles)... These are the two that causes nasty skin necrosis. Then there is also the Black Button Spider (Latrodectus)

    For more info on Latrodectus sp. go to: http://www.arc.agric.za/home.asp?pid=4141

    I've been keeping tarantulas for 7 years and I've never been bitten.. I handle any tarantula and most people ask me how do I do that. I've done re surge at home on how tarantulas re-act when you poke them from any side and how to handle them without getting bitten. There is 2 rules that always apply when you want to handle tarantulas. The problem I've got is that because of those 2 rules I handle Black button spider, Parabuthus transvaalicus scorpions ( 2nd most venomous scorpion in South Africa) and all type of spiders.

    I normally go out with the spider club to learn people about spiders and scorpions.

    I just think I totally forgot the meaning of "Venomous and DO not Handle"
