    HI guys.

Have a question about 4foot tanks and stands. I have seen manny people simply place these tanks on a stand only with a piece of polystyrene and others will use a board under that.

So tell me in your oppinion what do you think is the safer way?

I re-enforced my stand with 2 extra pieces of square- tubing at the top. Then I pop riveted a piece of 10mm masonite board on top of the stand. HTH.

No reason to reinforce with the board. What can happen when the board gets wet, it swells and your tank cracks. The Poly should be enough. I have 1 x 5ft tank, 1 x 1m tank and 2 x 90cm tanks all running fine with only polystyrene. Never ever had an issue.

Hi there. I agree with Sean J that when Masonite gets wet it will swell and crack your tank. I think a better bet would be to get Marine Ply and varnish that with a Marine varnish to seal it and then place the tank on that. This will be more water resistant and repel water before it can get into the wood thus less chance of damaging your tank, there are other methods out there too. Most tank manufacturers use polystyrene under their tanks, I think there must be some logic to their madness, don't you. Just my take on this.

I bought a piece of pine sanded it down and added 4 layers of varnish ans stuck my tank on that works like a charm and looks good too.

Thanks guys for the reassurance going to stick with the polystyrene idea. What thickness do you recommend?

    For a 1.5m tank, 15mm. For a 4ft, 10mm.

Well it's a tank just with PFS moved all the discus and filters in today. The way I asked for the tank to be braced now scares me a little. Got the inside of the tank braced like an up side down H or two squares if you looking in to the tank from the top. Git a piece of glass running across the front to back in the centre if you kno what I meen. I did not brace the top of the two side pieces as I wanted to use a hang on filter. Do you think it's ok?

I will start another thread and ask this question proper tomorrow.

8mm glass, full bracing at the bottom and the piece across the middle I reckon is ok. Seeing as the tank is higher than normal why not opt for another thinner bridge on either side of the main one in the middle?

Start the thread lets hear what the pros say

If your tank is double braced at the bottom and braced at the 4 corners all the way up with a brace on top in the middle - no worries it wont bow
