    Hi guys,

    I’ve already got some good advice in the other threads I’ve started, but I’d like to start this thread as a place to better group the questions I have about the tank I plan to start in January.

    First some details on what I’m planning:
    A peaceful community tank.
    Tank size is 3ft, roughly 100 liters.
    Pool filter sand substrate, with rocks and plenty of vallisneria.
    Aquaclear 30 power filter.

    I will start posting some question soon :).

    Hi.

    Just a tip. Vall do not do well with Seachem Excel. It melts away when over dosing.
    Glad to see you got a 3footer as suggested.

    Thanks Derik, the change to 3ft was on your suggestion, it required buying some new furniture. :D

    Stocking ideas

    Some thoughts on stocking;

    I’m running my filter in a neighbor’s tank for 3 to 4 weeks over December, which will hopefully give me a good start on cycling my tank. After getting the tank set up, I will wait about five days before adding the first fish. Does this sound ok?

    These are some of the fish that have caught my eye;

    I would like to have a school of 10 or 11 of one of the following:
    Penguin Tetra / Rummy Nose Tetra / Pristella Tetra / Lemon Tetra / Beckford’s Pencilfish / Harlequin Rasbora / Odessa Barb / Cherry Barb

    I’m thinking of starting off with 2/3 fish and adding 3 per week until the school is complete. Does that make sense? Are any of these not good starter fish / aggressive / plant destroyers / hard to find? Any other suggestions?

    Later I would like to add a school of 5 or six of one of the following:
    Bronze Cory / Sterbai Cory / Melini (False Bandit) Cory.

    Thanks for reading!

    I'm very happy that my cycling short cut seems to have worked. I've had six tiny Harlequin Rasboras in my tank for almost a week and my ammonia is measuring zero with a liquid test kit. I ran my filter in an established tank for three weeks and also put some pebbles from that tank into my HOB filter.

    This weekend I will add two more Harlequins and then let things settle for a month or so. In the end I am thinking of adding a school of six Bandit or Panda corys and a school of eight Rummynose tetras which should be the maximum stocking rate.

    The Vallis that I put in died back a bit but seems to be recovering well, with some new growth. They were quite badly infested with snail eggs, and the seller's advice of dipping in a salt solution was pretty useless. I should have done some better research. I am quite worried about what other parasites might have hitched a ride...
