Started this setup on saturday where i upgraded the 2ft to 3ft. This tank is mainly for cories and maybe other cats at a later stage. Currently the tank houses 7 cories(bronze and pepper) and juvenile angels. I used the playsand which i had to wash clean:push: but the end result is worth it.

The filter is a HOB at 200lph, there is no heater because durban hardly has a winter. The java fern takes up majority of the landscape with a few vallis and an amazon sword. By the way , the light is a daylight tube

Nice - speedz ... Play sand is ok but I found it very fine - and my plants did not stay put after planting them. I am sure your Cories will love it - now send some of the "no heater required" weather to JHB please

    Looks like a great setup!
I've got 7kg of Seachem Flourite under my playsand in my 3ft tank and the plants have all rooted down into that. You could also use crushed jasper, the red gravel, because it's also very high in iron, which the plants love. But it has to be UNDER the playsand because the corys will cut their barbels on the bigger chips of jasper.

eish that might be a bit hard especially since the tank is setup now. I have noticed that the amazon has just started sprouting new leaves though

@whipme how about some pics of your tank

The only thing that solved or helped with my algae problems is my Siamese Algae Eater. The algae is still there, but he eats most of it.

so i dropped a pleco in and the little guy got rid of that nasty brown hair algae, his having a field time eating all that algae.

I lost another cory again to a swim bladder problem. I've narrowed the cause down to the food i was feeding them. Was feeding them pellets but i changed it to flakes now. Next im saving up for some purigen

sorry for the poor quality pic, took it with my phone

it seems as if hoplos are a bit scarce here in durbs so i've settled for plecos. Im planning on setting a 3ft tank beneath the one i have and getting some "Raphaels catfish" aka African talking catfish but the bank is saying no lol

i forgot to mention how agro the resident pleco got once i added 2 more to the tank, it was sort off "headbutting" the new guys, weird!

i've never seen a pleco that aggressive

between 1 and 3cm. Under the HOB filter the level is about 1cm because of the water flow. Theres about 10kg playsand in there from the 20kg packet that i bought
