Just got my saphire tank from yuppie pets ... packaging was great and made it easy to carry this tank.
    36dec01.jpg

Tanks fits perfectly in the space next to my working area.

    36dec05.jpg

Love the clean lines on this glass ... BTW it is a floating base tank 10mm all round.

    36dec06.jpg

Will need to make sure we do not bang into the edges ...
    36dec07.jpg

    Next some planting.

Substrate - Expanded Shale and ADA that I had lying around.
Plants some stuff from donor tanks are added first.

    36dec08.jpg

Layers in the substrate - I do not care about them getting mixed.

    36dec09.jpg

    current planting done ..
    36dec10.jpg

love the 580 width gives you loads more planting space

Wow. Like all the other tanks as well.
What light are you using above the new tank?

Thanks - was fun doing a layout from scratch.

Yeah - lets say it is my xmas present and santa could not fit it into my stocking ;-) - I like that I am going to use it.

Lights - hmmm, so the only thing I really planned for this build was getting the tank, the rest needs to happen from stuff that I have accumulated and hoarded, or left overs from other projects etc.

So lights I have a few options and no clear direction as yet.

    a) I should have some oppel T5 3ft left with reflectors - need to go dig for them.
    b) could do CFL's both custom pendant and the game gooseneck versions
    c) LED's - yes I still have some left from the experiments I did a while back - so could look at making a string or two - thin I still have 12v DC power supplies available
    d) Buy some fancy new thing - not a real option at this stage - stocking already full.

I might need to put some batting in the power head - a hydor 120/200 (also a past impulse buy - so now I have a use for it), get the water nice and clear then we decide on the lights.

Could not for the life of me understand why I had so many bubbles in the tank ... turns out I had a vortex ...

    36dec12.jpg

Oh well .. need to play with the water level still.

Cool - thanks Derik .. yeah funny how one looks at everything via new eyes when you have a new tank. Rescaping and existing tank is just not the same as a different size / shape etc.

Ok lights camera action. Heinrich your question about the light made me go an play with what I currently have.

I took the single LED string on the 4 small tanks that amongst other things is hosting the expanded shale experiment, BTW been adding Scape's Carbon stuff - wow now I need to increase light on those low tanks, but this is another story.

    36dec13.jpg

So you can clearly see the problem with only 1 strip - very directional and does not cover the entire tank

    36dec14.jpg

Not going to grow any spectacular tanks with just one strip.

    36dec15.jpg

Still not bad if it was just for viewing.

    36dec16.jpg

I am running low on 6mm glass - so the plan is to get some 6mm glass 910 x 200 and then mount two strips minimum to each. This will allow for some movement of the lights and easy maintenance.

BTW the 910 is so that I can use the same panels on my other 3ft tanks in the future if need be.

I tried raising the LED stip but at 10cm above the water a huge amount of light does not reach the substrate so the glass lid design it will have to be.

    Thanks Broder ...

    This is number 36

20 in the dinning room - ah fishroom
    6 in the courtyard
    the remainder on the stoop.
of the 36 - 6 are dry currently or being used for an substrate emersed growing thing, not very successfully I might add.

As for fish - yeah this was supposed to be the convicts new tank but that ain't going to happen - so the other 1/4 want some more colourful fish - like the first tank we had - ah no we are not putting goldfish or a gourami in the tank.

So let see, but no guppies with fresh ADA so will need to find some other hardy stock.

Other 1/4? That means you have 2 kids, or 3 wives or you're a large fellow? Careful... MWS is far more draining than MTS will ever be:)

Whats wrong with Gouramis? They sooooo purdy...

lol nah - I am 1/2 work is 1/4 she is the other 1/4 .... nothing wrong with them they just have a bad rap in our house since they killed most other fish in the tank at the time.

    36dec17.jpg

Glass top seem to fit - ended up with two sheets 900 x 28 x 6mm now to get LED in play. Not sure about the LED glass configuration yet .. might put three strings on one sheet and two on the other hmm or only run one sheet with 3 strings.

Still need to add the lights and the batting but by dropping the powerhead I have no more bubbles, truth be told I do not like the lack of flow at the moment so need to adjust things a bit more.

Love the view from the working side of the tank - not 100% sold on the java fern on my right, but I have some alternatives.

Just surprised you are taking up so much tank space for use as work area. LOL :) give up half and it could be 37.

he he - it was always a dream to put a 1.8 down on this stand .. but as luck would have it I will not be able to do that at this stage so we work with what we have.

Actually the stand was designed for a 1.8 with two 3ft's on top but at a hight of 750 of the floor it makes for the perfect workstation. Here is the thread on the stand build 1.8 meter stand - build

I need to go double check the math - at 18W/m it means I might not have the correct 12 volt supply on hand.

Did some soldering this morning - decided to drop the voltage to 11.6 volts this give me a current draw of 2.15 amp so a total power consumption just under 25Watt's. Well within the 3 amp limit I have on the current supply.

    36dec27.jpg

Still need to stick the light down - yes on the other side of the glass ;-) but now I can play with moving them around a bit.

    36dec26.jpg

I am pleased with the overall look with the LED's

    36dec28.jpg

    36dec29.jpg

Must remember to add the batting before I go to work this morning.

I have to wonder about my mind ... so I wanted to put some weight on the strips to keep them flat before I glue then to the 6mm glass I got yesterday, reach up onto blackjack and pull down two sheets of 4mm .. hmm these will work way better than the 6mm I just got cut ... Oh well at least I can use the 6mm for winter covers.

    36dec31.jpg

Still need to mount them so have time to change my mind - again.
