    Hi all!

    Some advice please.

I just found a 300 litre SunSun 4 foot bow-front tank with cabinet for sale. R500.

Problem is there is a crack on the bottom pane.

Is this worth buying? I could fix a square glass tank easily enough myself but this is obviously curved. :(

    Thanks all!

I'll be seeing the tank this evening I will do that, thank you.

Is this a reasonable price? What am I looking at approximately to repair this?

500 for a 4 foot is a great price, but if you cant fix it yourself you it will probably cost you a bit to replace that bottom

Definitely a good buy. If you don't want it I'll take it.
It's interesting, I have a mate with a SunSun curved front and his base also cracked. The compressed fiber board those tanks are made out of warps a lot. Maybe put it on a piece of plywood.

Well good news (I think) is it’s the back pane. So it’s square. Definitely can do this myself I reckon13fcaa0ab75d15befda5a642eb4384c3.jpg6a5a28b9062f8c99953368fb4b0d8aa6.jpg

if it is then take it, scrap the bottom cabinet or just replace the top part..
    how thick is the glass?
you would have to redo the whole tank

Yeah will take it for sure.

I'll strip it down and redo all the seals in any event.

That plywood idea is a good one.

Bit of a step up from my 120 litre

So I managed to get the side trims off so far. Anyone got any ideas how I get the top brace/trim off?

I’ve run a blade all round the inside and outside but it’s not even moving yet.

Can you not just clean is up as best as possible in the bottom corner and but a 6mm glass strip say 5 cm higher than the crack around the crack area? Removing the to brace will probably compromise the entire tank going forward.

If you are absolutely intent on removing the rim ... try getting some thin guitar wire from the one side to the next, the cheese cut holding both ends very close to the panel.

Ok well I have got it off. The idea being to replace the entire back pane. I was under the impression that cracked side panes couldn’t be patched

Once the glass is replaced, the brace is going back on for sure.

That mush have been a fight ... make sure that when you replace all is well cured so leave the tank without water till you nolonger smell the aquarium silicone.

As for the crack - it all depends on how it was cracked and how the crack spreads - in this case it looked like the corner was bashed and that the panel was already split from edge to edge. Things also change a bit if you have bracing at the bottom, here it looks like you had tank bracing - the trim.

But yes - better safe than sorry ;-)

I used the knife, and a thin wide paint scraper. Just keep at it. You’ll need some patience. On mine there seemed to be a couple big blobs at a few points, so make sure your weapon of choice (scraper in my case) reaches right up inside.

I got one corner loose first, then gently pulled it upwards. The silicone started letting go at this point.

I also tried spraying acetone up inside the trim. Don’t know how much that helped.

    Anyways, good luck !

Just remember you need to TOTALLY clear off all the old silicone before glueing again. Old silicone and new silicone are not good together !!

Um -acetone melts plastic so just be careful. If you get it on the outside of the frame you will end up with a dull area wherever it makes contact. It also dissolves glue so it should work.
