It's sad to think people have to live on R20'000 a year. I'm guessing this is in connection with Zuma's new Boeing 777. work out how many RDP houses can be build with 2 billion.

If you place R100 notes 6 notes x 15 notes to form a square on a pallet and you stack it up to 1 meter high, that is one hundred million rand. Multiply by 10 = one billion. In other words two billion are 20 pallets full of R100 notes.

If you were given $1000 a day, every day since the year 0, by the year 3000 you would have a little over $1 Billion ($1 095 000 000). I can barely comprehend that.

That's probably quite a good way to put it... (interest aside), but just in rands...
If you were given R2000 a day from year 0 to year 3000 you could buy your own private jet ;)

Tell her you can buy every single person in the country their own farm with a big house on it and 3 cars and you might get to 2 billion.

And that is not every household that is every SINGLE person.

@Rory - At least with your option you get 2 for the price of one. Do we get 2 planes for the price of one?

Is this billion in the US system (10^9), or SI Billion (10^12) that we use in South Africa?

I don't think anyone uses the SI definition when it comes to money. (probably because no-one has that much money)

Wow, what a funny thread but also a bit depressing (definitely some perspective). Here I am wondering how I will afford my honors and post-grad education certificate next year (total cost including living expense probably in the regions of R200 000) all so I can play a role in empowering youth in science, if my dreams come true and I live long enough hopefully hundreds of young minds, although I could settle on 1 or 100.
