I guy is selling a 2.5m x 80cm x 73.5cm tank with an additional sump (unsure on the size of this)

It comes with a stand but thats about it (no hood). They guy says it was used for keeping live rock and coral (glass is very thick apparently) but that the glass is not scratched at all.

He originally wanted R8000 which I told him was waaay to much so he's asked me to make an offer.

    a) what does a tank like this go for?
    b) what should I offer him!

    Any input would be appreciated!

I picked up a 2m tank with all extras and a 1.2m tank with everything needed to run both tanks and there stands for R2000.00 you that might be a good start

Good Point - I have a double cab bakkie but dont think it will fit in there unless I drop the tailgate. How did you move yours Henk?

Might ask my Dad if he would lend me one of his work trucks.

Gareth - that sounds more like what I would pay but going from 8k to 2k might give the oke a heartattack, no harm in trying tho ;)

It's such a pity the second hand market for tanks is so bad. I mean let's face it, a 2.5m tank new would have probably set the guy back R6k or thereabouts... and all he can get on the second hand market is what, 2k, maybe 3 if he's lucky.

I think it's one of the most "depreciting" hobby around!!! The moment you buy a new tank at R10k, you can then only resell it at R5k if you lucky!

A R500.00 filter we all try flog off at R100.00, and still get told we expensive!

i normally have the large tanks cut up and transported by either an LFS or a glass company.

Would suggest cut up and transport ,my 1,8 weighs about 240 kilos and took five of us to move it and it was a struggle.

A friend of mine got 2.5 for free the other day:push: I think they popped it on the back of a bakkie and moved it.

He could have. Did not expect to find that.

I would also say cut up and then transport. trying to move a 8 footer together is S@*#T . Trust me i know and it is easier to move around.

Also do yourself a favour and mae sure you can get that thing into your house.

I've seen some people buy these monster tanks, and then discover when they get home they actually can't get it around that )(*&^T% corner to get it into the room they want it!!! And it lands up in the garage!

I hope you have 5 or 6 VERY close friends to help you move that thing... At those dimensions it's probably made from 10 - 12mm glass and it's gonna weigh an absolute ton. Standard door width is 800mm so it should fit through a door. Just make sure there are no strange corners to move it around.

Speaking of the second hand tank market, the smaller the tank the more you can make out of it. It's the strangest thing.

Nothing hey... hence my Q to see if its worth it. I've actually been doing some checking around and there's a 1.5m tank for sale for R500. Think the 2.5m will be a bit more than I can manage

Have you ever thought that if the tank is deeper than 60 cm that you are going to need a mask and snorkel to clean the bottom of the tank? I mean think about this before you think of the transport of such a tank!

    Just a thought....

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
