Well, I've been out of the hobby since last year. I had to sell my 3ft because of space limitations.
We have moved into a new place recently and I can start playing around again.

I got my hands on a 300x230x300 tank a few day ago. Will this be suitable for a Betta male?

Anybody have any suggestions as to gravel, decorations and filtration for the wee 'lil 1ft?

    TA
    Ruan.

The size sounds alright :) I've noticed my male tends to LOVE swimming through the spaces the plants created. I think a nice planted tank with some arches here 'n there would be good. Substrate I'm not too sure about. Someone else will definitely have a betta answer for you ^^,

as i've read on the internet, some people don't use filters, they generally just do regular water changes...not sure if thats right, as i've never kept a betta, but might consider getting one...

    LOL, nice one
I want to go with natural plants, but I also want something different.
I saw a Bamboo garden Betta tank a while ago, which was quite interesting to say the least.

I figured a small hang-on-back should do the trick.

"How do you keep the Betta bowl clean with no filter system?"

    answer :

"Go to Wal-Mart and get specalized rocks that absorb waste in the water. They will normally be blue and grayish-white."

"I have a snail in mine to clean away the dirt but just one they breed "

Oooh yes I think I know which one you're talking about... is it the one with the buddha at the back of the tank? Looks stunning!

hehehe I can see us having similar Betta setups :D
My bf wants to take the male Betta tank as his own when we receive the large tank, because he wants to do the bamboo type setup.

Yeah, I dont want to replicate the bamboo setup to the tee, but I do want something unique.

Maybe a foam backing to make it look more "au naturelle!"

When I think of Beta's, for some reason I always think of the rice paddy's in china. So for me a bamboo, or similar dense plantation will look stunning... i.e long thing plants throughout the tank.

foam backing would be a lovely idea! you going to make it look like rocks?

Yeah, we're just using the bamboo idea.. staying away from the statue part

Ditto to Zoom's idea, I think a white-ish substrate with a few bamboo stick and maybe a plant or 2 would look superb...especially with a bright coloured betta.

    YESSS!
    You read my mind!

Yebo, forming the Foam to look like a rocky structure, but what paint can I use thats water safe...

EDIT to add: My wife does not like the idea of the budda aswell. :)

Superb, guess I should start a thread soon.

Thank you for the advice guys.

    and girl. :embarrest:

I tried a 1ft Betta set up like ths once... It was actually for my wife as she loves the betts'a

But when the swordtails had their babies... the wife TOLD me that if I wanted to keep on fishkeeping, I had to get rid of (her) betta tank, and put the babies into the 1ft to grow out! When the swords all died or grew up, I had to reset up the betta tank. At this point I "decomissioned" this tank!

would be cool if you could setup a mangrove style tank where the plant grows OUT of the tank and roots are exposed. that would be off the hook

in terms of filtration. try go with the least amount of flow. as stated, this bad-asses are found in rice paddies and you can imagine that there is zero flow! i have a HOB filter and that was ample flow of Mr. Zapata

I have also read that bettas prefer little or no surface agitation.

If I remember correctly it's beacuase they can breathe in air from the surface, so keep the water flow at minimal.

oooh yes! that would look AWESOME!

Wouldn't it be cool if we could do this exactly as the Betta's habitat, with the rice! Wonder how one goes about growing rice.
