    Hi all my Fellow Aquarists,

I am planning on buying a second hand tank, 1200Lt tank with a 200lt sump, it is like new. What are your thoughts on it? I need some expert advice and tips.

Having a tank that alone(Dry), weighs 260kg, sump(dry) 100kg, total water capacity 1400kg, stand 100kg, that alone is over 1.8 tonnes. I just don't want to wake-up one morning and have to swim to my kitchen to make coffee...

Will the floor support the weight? I'm on the ground floor, large tiles, the tank has a full length sheet of wood underneath the stand.

    Thanks,

    hello @Wolfaard

my boss has a similar set up but for marine and it seems to be holding up in his place but to move between the back of the tank is a mission and water changes are huge probably the same amount as my 3 foot... ive always said that a tank that size for fresh water would be amazing but the lighting would have to be a lot and costs could be huge just to get it up and running... the wood might break by the sounds of things could you post pics?

@Joubert, the measurements are 2300x750x700 and the sump is 1500x600x460.

@Quue, I am planning on making it freshwater, don't know if I would use the sump, got a couple of canisters. Will post pics soon.

Sump offers better filtration and is easier to maintain while a Cannister is compact and a bit of a mission to maintain for the first few months.

Is the tank drilled?,is it open top or closed top?

Drilled, 2 holes on both back corners, corners are comparted off from the tank. Like a triangle in each corner(Back).

    Hi.

It’s difficult to say if the tiles will crack. It depends on how the stand is made. You said it got some wood under the tank? Also depends on what kind of tile you have. Please send a few pictures of your floor and the tank so we can have a look.

Hi @Wolfaard, looks like a stunning tank!

As @top_dog mentioned, if the tiles are layed with solid adhesive (i.e. not the 5 spots - I'm in the tiling game), they should be fine - looking at that base, the wood etc. will distribute the weight evenly.

I have a similar setup with my 1000L and no cracks in site (on plain ceramic tiles like you have there). Just watch water getting trapped under the wood (mopping / water changes) - you don't want it to rot or swell over time.

I would suggest getting an engineer's advice. That is some serious weight added to your foundations

i am a bit skeptical regarding the wood beneath the frame(if that is how it is installed)....understanding that you dont intend on wetting the wood intentionally,if at some stage due to water or termites or whatever the case, the wood collapses on a side or corner, then you might have problems....lots of maybes but better safe than sorry

Thanks @richardnuss, it is marine ply wood, I am worried about that. What thickness glass did you use on the 1000lt? This tank is only made with 12mm glass, it has full strengthened brazes on top and bottom, but still, I don't want a ton of water inside my house, on the floor.

haha, @rednox, this tank is still at the sellers place, I'm planning on the move as we speak, a 260kg tank alone, hehe,:hmmmm2: I need some man power:weird:. Will post pics "If" I get it and it is standing, halfway with water, in my living room!

I keep discs, option A, 40 - 50 Discus shoal, option B, Full fledged comune, from A-Z, you name it, one MoFo of a community tank? What you guys think?

    @fishcrazy, can you imagine that!
:weird: 1.4 tones come crashing forward......... My wife would first leave me, taking I was not 'ogling' my fish when this happens and flattened in the accident, then I would repair damages till the end of days...

 - points for big tank...

Maybe get a thick strong rubber matt to replace the bottom piece of wood?
