Red Jasper gravel as a Fe supplement

Found some red jasper gravel yesterday - man this stuff is heavy for its volume. Was wondering if anybody uses or have comments on the use of red jasper as an iron supplement in a planted tank.



I might do a mix with normal silica of about the same size as the final substrate mix.

Might work but what are you gonna do when the Fe Levels get to high?

 

Water change?

f-fish, why do you want to increase Fe ? Are you big in plants?

How does this stuff compare with a nail in the substrate?

 

Been looking at alternative substrates ... Jasper is just one of the interesting alternatives and I found some locally. So if you assume that I do most of my fertilization in the water column, do not have any nails in the substrate then adding some Jasper might have some benefit?

Well that is indeed the question - I do not know.

BTW - if I want to make a funky tank I might actually consider some Amethyst gemstone gravel - 2 - 5mm (but that is purely for the beauty of it, but min order seems to be a few tons - sigh)
