    hey guys,

I went off to my LFS to get a pair of pearl gouramis for my 2m and i saw a lone little oto swimming around. I asked if they had any others and the guy said they had one other. So i asked him to put both in a bag for me and went to go pay at the till.
Once I had put them both into my tank, i realised, like a numb nut that they were in fact 2 completely different fish!!!! Don't even go there!!!!! goes to show what happens when i'm not paying attention and my brain is short of sleep and caffeine!!!!

anyway, so i need an ID for this other fish please.
pics weren't so easy to get and this fish is tiny in a 2m....its only +- 2cm long!
it has barbels on a rounded head and 2 black stripes, one from nose to end of body and a shorter one from pelvic fin to anal fin. It looks like a teeny little cory.
For its size, its got serious attitude! chases my little cherry barbs around!

hmmmm, i thought perhaps it might be that, are they easy to get more of? I don't remember ever seeing them before at my LFS. although, haha!, that doesnt necessarily mean much!
shame, i cant leave him alone in my tank and I'll never catch him to return him! will they school with other corys?

Kinda rare - theres been reports of them around Cape Town over the last few weeks. I would keep them in school of 5 or more if you can find more. Otherwise sell it to a member with a school of them.

    cool, thanks for the help.
I'm worried it might not survive the larger fish when i add them to the tank in a few weeks...its just so tiny! i've got a school of sterbai corys in another tank with platys and danios...perhaps i should move it there so long. yeah, if i cant find more of them i'll definitely rehome it!

Corydoras hastatus is the proper name, they are nice little fishes. There are quite a few around here in LPS in the bigger CT area.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

It looks like a corydora pygmaeus to me. I have 5 of them at the moment. Should be kept in a school of at least 6 to 10. Nice little fish, try and get some more.

@Gert Combrink & @wolf in what depth tanks do u guys keep these little fellas? I've heard on other sites that their swimbladders are quite sensitive to pressure.
Also what pH water do u keep them in?

    Good Times,

You should realize that in the depth of the tanks that we keep fishes in the depth has no influence whatsoever on their swimbladders, I do not know where this story comes from, but there is no influence here. They may be sensitive to pressure changes which may be during air transport, but not as a result of slightly deeper tanks, about that I am sure. I would keep them in tanks of about 30-40 cm deep because they lay their eggs on the glass sides of the aquarium. They need acidic water somewhere between pH 5.5 and 6.5. Some areas in the northern Cape have harder water, and this will have a negative effect if you may want to breed these fishes.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
