    Hi Guys,

    I have a quick question.

I purchased a 300W Jager heater today and put it into my tank. All is well, the water is warming up etc...

The question I have is on the box and pictures I have seen on the internet show the heater has a black plastic like cylinder all the way to the bottom through the heating coil.

The heater I have does not have any black plastic like cylinder at all in the heating coil area, you can see straight through it.

Is this how they are made now? or is something wrong here ?

    Thanks,

But ive heard that the old model jager is not fully submersible and the new model is fully submersible. lets hope u werent duped into a fong kong model. Im sure one of the guys will give u a definate answer and relieve that post purchase cognitive dissonance...i still wonder whether i should hav gotten the jager. Cheers

    Hi Jwalker

I know what you mean by the pic on the box and how the actual heater looks. I've got 4 Jager 300watts and they all don't have the black plastic in the tube. They are fully submersible and you can even calibrate them.

@Shakes what size tanks do you have your heaters on and how long did it take to warm the water to required temperature on the first run?

    Thanks,

Jwalker I have a 840lt tank and I'm about to build my 1120lt tank because the glass has just arrived and the stand will be ready next week sometime. I'll be totally honest and say I don't know how long it took to reach its temp because the same day I started up the tank I left for a three week holiday and left the tank to cycle while I was away. Each tank has one 300w jager in each corner. But once the new tank is setup I will let you know.

    @Shakes,

Thanks, are you building the tank by your self?

No jwalker, I'm getting a guy who builds fish tanks to come do it for me. I attempted to repair my 840lt once and ended up with all the water on my lounge floor at 22h00 and with a very unhappy wife. Lol. But I will send you pics when it's complete.

Okay guys, I need some help here.

    1. Does the red light on the Jager go off when it is not heating and come on when it is heating like other heaters or is it just an indication that the heater is working?

    2. My tank is 650L(at water line) and the 300W Jager is rated for 600 - 1000L tanks, I have the heater right next to my canister filter inlet and you can actually see the inlet pulling in the heated water (you know the line\syrupy look water gets when heating up) - now I had the heater set to 26deg and the tank has been running for well over 24 hours and almost 2 days but the temperature does not go past 19deg? (and the heater can only be re-calibrated for about 2deg so surely this cannot be a calibration error)?

Help me understand this please am I doing something wrong?

try moving the heater to right next to your filter outlet, so that the warm water gets circulate inside the tank, and doesnt get circulated outside the tank and through the filter, where it probably cools down again.

my tank's only 120l but I moved the heater to right in front of my canister's outlet and within a couple of hours the tank was a good 3 or 4 degrees warmer, without me having changed anything on the heater

    Hi Anine,

    Will try that,

Just seems very strange, as it is also much warmer now and if the heater is almost 8deg of on temp what is going to happen in the middle of winter.

I have all my other tanks setup with the heater near the canister inlet and they are cheap brands like resun & via aqua which work 100%

How do it happen that my jager heater got water on the inside? And what will happen if I use it like that? Is there any way to get the water out again?

    @Shakes,

it is pretty good, I have 2 strong canister filters on the tank, what I have done is to cross them over as well i.e. canister 1 inlet on the right and outlet on the center to left, canister 2 inlet on the left and outlet on the center to right. So the heater is actually feeding into the canister inlet on the left and being delivered to the center\right of the tank.

    If that makes sense :)

that does make sense, however , i also agree with placing the heater at an angle over the outlet of your canister filter. This will allow the heated water to circulate through your tank and maintaining your temp.

A little bit of condensation is normal and should be fine. If there's actually water running around in there then it's stuffed.

    Hey Guys & Gals,

Just some feedback, I managed to get the temp up to 27-28deg.

Waiting to see how it holds over the nights etc... for a while.

    Lesson:
Even though I have to strong canisters on the tank & even after placing the heater directly in the flow of the inlet the temp only went up to about 23-24deg.

I then took my internal filter from another tank and placed this in front of the heater to circulate the water. temp now 27 - 28 deg. (Flow still not perfect - will need a stronger internal filter or so... still working on a plan)

Lesson: a 200L tank vs a 800L tank has very very different dynamics - From my experience with my standard 4foot tanks in my head the original setup of my 800L was sufficient however I was wrong it is completely different.

Anyways, this is my first large tank. So I have learnt something new :)

PS: The tank is actually almost 750L to water line and almost 850L to the top excluding canister volumes. (I made a mistake in my measurement :) )

Good feedback ... same is also true if you need to cut back on electricity. I you do not need to heat all of the tank to 28 degrees but need warm spots then to much flow could also be an issue. Now many will defend a constant temp in the entire water column - but this is actually not true for natural water systems. The bigger your tank the more space you have to mimic nature to some degree ... so why run the entire thing at a constant temp?
