    Hi Jaco,

We call this type of aquarium a low tech, basic setup. I think pretty much everyone starts with something similar and it is a great way to start out your journey as a fishkeeper :) In my experience while these types of setups are interesting for awhile, it doesn't take long for you catch a disease called MTS (More Tank Syndrome) :amuse: As you see/read about all the different fish or setups that you could have you begin to get a feeling that you just have to have one! This usually entails either upgrading the size of the tank or simply purchasing more tanks to enable you to purchase more/bigger fish. You then go through a process of selling and buying tanks and fish until you find your niche. It is an adventure that is bound to have its ups and downs but overall it is an exciting and rewarding journey! Goodluck!

As far as advice goes, I would start with taking your plants out of the pots...

    Hi mate.
Welcome to the forum. With regards to the roots, remove them slowly from the cotton. If they brake a little that’s ok. As soon as they are placed in to some good substrate they will soon start growing well. I have heard that keeping plants in those pots with cotton will kill them off slowly.

Some of us plant keepers even trim back the roots just a little to stimulate growth.

    Looking good Jaco.

My next bit of advice would be the background. Now deciding on a background for your tank is tricky because you want it to look as natural as possible so most of us get one of the standard background pics like you have but I find that those backgrounds always detract from your aquascape. If you do a bit of research you will find that most of the amazing tanks all have plain backgrounds that allow you to have a better view of what is in the tank. Obviously it comes down to personal preference but usually a dark blue or black background gives the illusion of deeper water and makes your fish look more colourful because of the contrast.

Here is my tank with a dark background-

Or if you are going for a specific look like a Malawi Biotope then you can select an appropriote background like this-

So really it comes down to what look you are going for but having the right background really does make all the difference :) My 2 cents worth
