Greetings Piscene People!

I was re-introduced to the hobby a few years back by a colleague, specifically with regards to planted tanks, but I never got around to getting started, sadly enough. I've just decided to get back in the game and I've chosen to start off with some Betta's, leaving the planted tank until my new house is built (no way am I setting up the tank and taking it apart when I move!).

Great to be a part such a vibrant community, hope to chat more with you folks soon!

Cheers,
Kevin

I have a 150L tank with two medium sized goldfish and decided to get a 14cm or so common pleco to keep them company (yes I will move him to a larger tank when he grows out more) and take care of the algae. I did this because I know that plecos can tolerate temperatures in the range of 20-28 degrees and I have even heard of them being kept here, all year round, in koi ponds. Previously I didn't have a heater in the tank, but when I brought the pleco home I added one and set it to 24 degrees. I think I will slowly bring the temperature down to 22 degrees though. Pleco seems happy as do the goldfish. I have read that plecos and goldfish are not always the best combination as the plecos sometimes suck on the goldfish, so I will watch for this. Anyone else kept this combination before? Is my thinking correct on this one or have I made a terrible mistake here? I know one doesn't mix tropicals and coldwater fish, but goldfish will tolerate up to 24 degrees and plecos will tolerate as low as 20 (and from what I have heard, even lower, provided the change is slow), so they do have common temperature requirements there. Your thoughts?

I am a big fan of anything Polypterus, but I have found that continually having to buy frozen lancefish (I get the Ruto brand) gets a little pricey, especially since I feed it to my non-fish aquatic pets too. The other day I was in Pick'n Pay and decided to buy some cheap hake pieces (just fresh hake chunks, skin still on and everything). I tried feeding it to the non-fishes, and they LOVED it. So decided to try giving some to my tropicals as well, and it was a hit with them too. My question is - is this a good food to feed to fish like Bichirs and Ropefish? Do any of you have any experience with feeding this to your Polypterids? As hake is obviously a saltwater fish, would this be healthy for a freshwater fish to eat on a regular basis? The Ruto lancefish apparently have the salt removed.

EDIT: I go through it with my fingers first and take out any and all bones, so bones are not an issue.

Hey all you fantastical TASA folks!

Would you like to see an actual demonstration of a setup and scape of an ADA Nature Aquarium? Well now you have a chance!

On June 16, at Loolilocks Koi Farm, there will be an actual setup and talk on the planted aquarium. We will be starting at 10:00am and the setup and talks will probably take around 3 hours to complete. Once we are done, we will have a bring and braai, and have a good old chat and answer all the possible questions, you might have!

There will be 4 speakers.

Myself, speaking about the ADA products and how to use them properly.
Angus Shippey (Algae Wizard), Speaking about the importance of proper maintenance after planting.
Richard Shih (shihr) Speaking about Plants, plant types and suitable plants for the planted aquarium
Raymond Sowden (Wearsbunnyslippers) speaking about the basics of Aquascaping
Ryan (Ryan) who will be speaking about the suitability of fish in the planted aquarium as well as the benefits of basic filtration on a planted aquarium.

Guys, this is an incredibly important event, as it will be one of the very first live aquarium setup demonstrations to ever take place in South Africa. This is going to be the first of many such exhibitions, and we hope that the turnout will be brilliant. After the event, we will have a braai, and you can have your turn with each and every one of the speakers, to ask your own questions, and just get to know your fellow forum members.

There is going to be a raffle at the event as well. The cost for a raffle ticket will be R10. The prize will be an ADA 60P Starfire Aquarium, 1 x 9l bag of Aquasoil and a R300 plant voucher from http://www.shrimps.co.za. So, you better be there, to stand a chance of winning the prize!

You can find more information on the event at the following websites:

I would personally like to thank @Rory for giving me permission to advertize this event on TASA, even though it is not organized by this forum. The more support we can get for planted aquariums, and freshwater aquariums in general, the more we will be able to educate the public and stores.

I hope to see as many of you guys there as possible! This is going to be an extremely exciting event, and we hope it will be the first of many.
Questions:
I live in northern suburbs of cape town...

Other alternative?

Thanks guys!
