View Full Version : Cooked peas for gourami's
Hi there,
I'd like to give my fish something more interesting than flakes and tablets, and have "heard" that the gourami's eat cooked peas...
Is this true? And is it advisable?
what are your thoughts, guys?
Feeding live frozen food is also good. You can buy frozen food from LPS, it comes looking like a chocolate slab. Just give them half a piece at a time. (let it defrost first before adding it to tank.) (Defrost will take about 5 mins)

not so sure about that... i have to leave mine out for atleast 2 hours.... 20g shirmp, 8 block jumbo blood worm, 4 block normal blood worm and 4 blocks mysis - and thats just for one tank.....:p
Take your square of frozen food, Take a cup of water out of the tank you are going to feed into and dump the square into the cup. When defrosted +- 5 min just pour the cup into the tank...

Sorry.... I forgot to mention that you defrost it in the tank water as Zafgak has mentioned above.
I'd feed my fish more often on frozen food... but the wife will not allow me to put frozen bloodworm.... or any other frozen fish food in our freezer...
He He He - Our freezer has more frozen fish food than real food !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soooo... No cooked peas??:blink1:
How often do you guys recommend frozen food
Frozen - every second or third day..
Ok thanks Zafgak - and the type of fish we were discussing with u guys this afternoon - what would be the recommended frozen we should go for?
I would keep frozen bloodworm as a starter -you can add mosquito larvae and others later. Bloodworm is a staple... also grab some freeze dried Tubifex for those in-between snacks :)

My Freezer is the same one night i nearly prepared bloodworms instead of mince. What a taste sensation that would have been! lol!!

Why not go ahead and try it Madam. We tried it in our community tank once with our bottom feeders (we do not have gouramis). Gave it up as a bad idea. We put about 50 peas in the tank and not many of them were eaten. The snails ate about 20 and then left it alone.
But if you do come right with it, let the people know that it works
Thanks Carping, so long as it won't harm my fish, maybe I will give it a try...
The worste that can happen (and that would be your own fault) is that they dont eat it and it rots in your tank. If you see that they dont eat it for a day, remove it.
That's right, I will keep my eye on it, maybe will only try a few peas at first.
Why does it need to be cooked peas?
I have always been advised feed them frozen peas, but just take the skin off first.
I'm not sure SauRon, it's what I read on a website (can't remember which one - was just browsing).
What is your experience with frozen peas? (good or bad?)

why not try some cucumber or baby marrow, my fish love that!

You must be joking Saroun, me sit there and take the skin off 30 peas...... Thats enough time to drink a beer or 2 that you wasting there. Then I'll rather throw them algea wafers
Shame, I only have a few gourami's... I wouldn't peel 30, but maybe ten or so as a little treat for them. That's only half a beer

Nah it's easy they just pop out of the skin.
But I've never understood why you should pop them out of the skin, I'm guessing it just doesn't freeze so much and is softer.
I've given my bigger fish lots of thawed peas (whole) without problems.
But as someone said cucumber is also a winner.
Have found cucumber to be a winner with my SAE's. They even bump the snails off or flick them off with their tails in order to get a bite at the cucumber LOL. Looks like a real battle scene when I put cucumber in the tank
Can't wait to try it, guys :o) Thanks!
